I have a computer that has windows 98 on it, it was someone elses computer, all i got was the computer, no disks, so I got a windows 98se disk with a produt ID number, and I would like to install windows 98se on it. What is the best way to do this? Do I just put in the disk and follow the what the screen says, or should i format the hard disk and then follow what the screen say's? thanks

I thought you said the box already has 98 installed on it.

This will appear to work--until it asks you for a Windows Product Key.
If what you have is a number of the form xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx
(and that number is valid),
when you enter that, you will get a basic Windoze install.[1]

If what you have is a "produt ID number" (whatever that is)
and you enter that, you will have a doorstop.

|or should i format the hard disk and then follow what the screen say's?
|
There is an option to do that in the install procedure.
I still don't understand your motivation.

[1] This ASSuMEs that the Windows distribution disk
contains device drivers for each hardware device in your box
(and that those are good enough to run things reliably).

I have yet to see why you want to poke the bear.

Stop with the stupid remarks! There is a reason that I want to reinstall windows 98se, the computer is not working right, it would be good to reinstall. Dont' reply to this if you really don't want to help. Guess this site is not good for help.

Get a boot disk to use fdisk, and format. Then you can install 98 on a clean Drive. Lot's of web sites have detailed instructions on using fdisk if you need more info.

Ken - Did you buy an upgrade or a full version of Win98SE? What does it say on the disk. e.g. "For computers without Windows?" or for "Computers with Windows 3.1/W95'? Anyway, if it's an upgrade version you can just insert it into the CD drive and it will ask you if you want to upgrade your system. Say yes and just let it go. Be sure to select "save system files". Just enter the product code when it asks for it. This procedure will keep all your files including drivers! If you got the full version you should do a clean install, that is, insert a boot disk and re-format the hard drive. Then re-boot and select start with CD-ROM support. At the A prompt insert the system disk and enter "setup" and it will install a new version of Windows98SE. Remember. this procedure erases all your old personal/system files so you will have to re-install drivers for your video and sound cards as well as modem or network adapter!

It is a full version, "For Computers without windows" so, the boot disk you are talking about is one made to start the computer, and then format the hard drive, then use the disk that came with CD and start the install process, is that right? thanks

Got a bootable disk and started the computer, and tried to format C: but when i typed it in it was formatc: it would not put a space after format, and of course it would not format. what am I doing wrong? the hard drive is small, it is 1.19 GB, and it only has a C drive. Any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Ken - do the following: 1. Put in the boot disk and select "start computer without CD-ROM support. 2. At the A prompt enter: "Fdisk" 3. Again at the A prompt enter: "Format C:" 4. When it asks if you want to erase evrything answer: "Y" 5. When it is finished give the volume a name like "MAIN" 6. Reboot and select "start computer with CD-ROM support." 7. At the A prompt insert the W98 disk and enter "setup" and the install will begin

ken,

Try this.
If you haven't, first make sure the "write protect" slide is protecting your 98 boot
diskette.

I assume your computer searches for the A or B drive first and boots from either
if available. If NOT then
start the computer and press DEL key to get to Bios Config pages. From Bios you
can change the boot sequence so that A or B is first on the list.

Start the computer with Boot disk installed in A (or B)
Once you boot up you should get the A:> (or B:>)prompt.
Type C: return
and get C:>
Type dir /a:d return
and verify you are commanding the C drive as the default drive.
Type FORMAT return
(you don't need the drive letter since the default drive is the C drive)

After format is complete
Continue with the 98se setup.
Good luck.
