Missing MSVCRT.dll, 98 wont' start, startup disk not loading

Hi, I have searched for an answer on this forum, and some come close, but no cigar. My problem is that I installed Windows 98 se on my daughter's old computer (it was running windows 95), and it worked fine at first, but about an hour later she tried to start it up and it gave her a page fault error that MSVCRT.dll was missing. She had been deleting old files to make room for new stuff, so that's likely what happened. The main problem is that the start up disc is not being read, and I can't even get the system to start up in safe mode. Is there a way I can access DOS, and then put that dll into the system file from there? I have no idea if or how this can be done. I have downloaded a copy of the dll, but can't do anything with it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Because you thought you were searching for the *biggest* problem.
You're not.

Interesting--but the Visual C runtimes are FAR from the most significant problem.

|She had been deleting old files to make room for new stuff,

Now we get to the heart of it.

"Startup Disk" == bootable floppy disk.
To what are you referring?

|and I can't even get the system to start up in safe mode.

The contents of the hard drive sound thoroughly borked to be.
If Windoze had been installed for only an hour,
the SMART thing to do is to just reinstall the OS.

...or you could chase your tail for a week
figuring out what all files she deleted
then trying to replace them one-by-one
--and still not have a well-behaved system.

As the computer starts up hold down the Ctrl key until you see the DOS menu, Normal Mode, Safe Mode etc. Select Command Prompt Only put in the floppy with MSVCRT.dll on it and type. Copy A:\MSVCRT.dll C:\Windows\System then Enter. Then try a restart to see what other errors it brings up. As gewg_ says you've just rebuilt it, rebuild it again, not a re-install. A Format and fresh install.

Just tried it, Keith, and it worked like a charm - no other problems (yet?). Thank you very much for your help.
