Reinstalled 98, Can't update 98 because of crashing on microsoft site

So I reinstalled win98 and got online with IE 4.0, now I know I need to update it
so I go to Microsoft.com. I try and get to the download section to get a new ver.
of IE, but everything is all screwed up. Some text is super small and some pages
won't load at all.
I search around on the net for another browser but the site either locks me up or
when I do actually download a browser such as IE5 and try and install it I get the
message that "the download location is damaged, please clear your browser cache".
I delete
temporary internet files and try again and it says the same thing. I think maybe
another brower might let me access the microsoft site so I can update 98, I download
and install netscape communicator which doesn't crash as much but still won't let
me use
the microsoft site. On other sites some of the text turns into a bunch of square
when I first open the page and text is overlapping and looking weird.

So, what should I be trying to do to fix these problems.

Thanks

Did you try Evolt.org ? They have I.E. 5.5 SP2. Huge download. 80 megs or so. If you can't, possibly someone with a burner, can download it and burn a copy for you. As well, you didn't mention the make size or brand. May need to go to the manufacturer's site and download chipset and/or video drivers..

This freeware Patch works for some, but seems not all have the same results. http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Windows-Update-Fix-for-Win9x-ME.shtml

Thanx Steve. This computer started going bad a few months ago. It had all the updates then, so I don't know what happened to it. I do know I lost the bios and puter was dead at turn on. Well, I know how to fix that now. I got that file downloaded. I pray it works! Thank you, Deborah

You will still need Internet Exploder for some sites. Avoid them when possible but there still are sites that use IE's mistakes as if they were features.

Since Microsoft is hassling you about downloading ie6setup.exe (which installs as IE 6.0 SP 1) here is a site with many download mirrors for it:

Or you may be able to skip any download. IE6 may still be on your drive. Use Start > Find and look for ie6setup.exe. Look for the file date Feb 5, 2004 5:17pm.

You can still download Internet
Explorer 6 SP1 from M$.

What I did a long time ago when I downloaded SP1 which downloads to a temp folder
on the HD. This took about 50 minutes with dialup. I burnt the folder to a CD which
cuts down on the installation time. It still needs a temporary internet connection
for one or two files but it installs in a couple of minutes.

Internet Exploder 6 is on your old AOL CDs

In the USA, you get an AOL CD in the mail about every 3 months.
If you can find one of these lying about,
there is no need to waste[1] bandwidth downloading IE.

[1] COMPLETE waste IMO.

IE6 SP1 on most ISP CD's

Most Internet Service Provider CD's have an IE6 Setup.exe on them, not just AOL's.

If you install IE6 SP1 before you go to the Windows Update site, it works just fine. I've verified this with several fresh Windows 98SE installs that I've done this year (2007).

It appears that IE6 is now a requirement for using Windows Update. If you go to Windows Update with a Windows 2000 computer using IE 5.01, the site will state that IE6 is required to use Windows Update (but at least it doesn't think you're on a Mac!).

Athlon 1.1 - 768 MB RAM = 98SE & XP Home

Athlon 3000+ 64 - 1024 MB RAM = 98SE (@768 MB RAM) & XP Pro

IBM ThinkPad PIII 900 - 384 MB RAM = 98SE & XP Pro SP2

Windows 2000 Server in the basement
