Hard disc full

Using Windows 98 SE with all Microsoft Updates installed on an 80GB hard drive, the
"Hard disk is full, do you want to clean up" message is displayed even though there
is 24GB of free space available.
Anyone know why?

Did Scandisk, Defrag, Virus scan, Malware scan, emptied recycle bin, purged the TEMP
folder, emptied 'Temporary Internet Files', and all the usual maintenance tasks already,
but it did not make a difference.

morning,
the root directory (c:\) can only hold a finite number of files (used to be 511 for
8.3 naming, less with LFNs).
Clear files out of your root and put them in directories off the root. Don
