My girlfriend runs win 98 and somehow she deleted her audio file - so now we need a driver for her or a way to get that back. any suggestions ? she has a 98 cd. I am running XP and its been a long time since i ran 98 and I ran out of suggestions.

Some of those suggestions you have already made and steps taken would save those responding here a lot of brain strain...

Maybe running the System File Checker might work? If it detects the audio file as
missing, with the 98 CD in the computer it'll be able to extract a copy of the file
and reinstall it. Worth a try. You might be able to run it through Programs>Accessories>System
Tools>SFC or System File Checker, or do a search for the sfc.exe file and click on
it to run it.

Good suggestion.

But System File Checker can be accessed easily with Start > Run and enter SFC.

Hi Sherry.

It depends what you mean by "she deleted her audio file". Deleted what file,
*.wav, *.mid, *.wmv, *.asf.

Do any sounds files play on her system?

Does her system make any sound? Check the volume control, C:\WINDOWS\SNDVOL32.EXE

Another suggestion is to download Windows
Media Player 9.0 Series

Have her try reinstalling her Sound device, if that's what you're referring to.

Just go into Device Mgr., click the + (plus) sign to expand Sound Video and Game
controllers. Highlight the audio device listed. Choose Remove then Reboot. Windows
should reinstall the sound drivers.

WMP 9 won't solve anything, and it's known to be problematic on most 9x systems.

Those who use and advocate for Internet Exploder / Outbreaks In Excess should also take note: You too do a disservice to the community when you pooh-pooh the common knowledge that those are the least secure applications a Windoze user can employ and are the vectors for the vast majority of the INFECTIONS experienced by the naive users who show up here with problems. While it is possible to make those ancient, essentially unsupported apps less insecure, the security of the out-of-the-box configuration of the  venerable  alternatives is FAR superior to *anything* that can be achieved by tweaking the junkware then pasting on several layers of band-aids.
