Win98 upgrade loads new drivers on its own

About once every 10th boot up, I'll see the computer is having some difficulty and
have discovered that I need to boot into safe mode--if the comp hasn't done this
itself--where I can "Remove" usually one or two drivers in Device Manager. It's
either the monitor driver (Win98SE has no driver for my Magnavox so I use a Phillips
that's probably similar). But the other is--the more frequent offender--a driver
under "Disc Drives" that's for a Maxtor drive; only mine is of Korean manufacture...so
I wind up with two drivers for the hard drive. I Remove the offending drive(s),
restart, and I'm good to go for awhile. I'm running a Windows 98SE upgrade over
my old Win98 OEM version. I once tried to install a bigger hard drive, but it was
a Seagate. (That didn't work, it was used junk.) All this on my old eMachines 333cs,
which I use for internet (dialup), mainly. I also have an old 20 gig Buslink portable
storage USB drive, which has its own driver. I thought this might be the offender,
thinking the OS may no longer be recognizing it and trying to load a driver for it
off the hard drive list. I reloaded the Buslink driver, and still get that Maxtor
one on occaision. Well, I'm puzzled...and yep, annoyed, when it happens.

Did the driver issue start after you installed Windows 98 SE on top of Windows 98?
I was thinking of doing the same thing, but if it creates driver issue's, I will
leave well enough alone. Sorry, I can't give you any advice on this problem. I know
Windows 98 has problems.

I know it is not a true fix, but it should work: Disable (not remove) those two devices
when they show up again. That way they should not be installed again, nor will they
be loaded at start-up.

Yes, I believe, in fact I'm sure it was afterwards... So far I haven't had any major
problems, but I'm thinking it could cause a system crash at some point. Or even
ruin my monitor--that's the prob with Win98, it needs the correct driver to run the
monitor, or else!

Bob,
No reason to put off your upgrade because others have problems. The poster could
have been having problems before the upgrade. Win98SE has more Drivers than Win98,
so there is a better than even chance you'll have few driver issues unless you have
installed much newer devices.
I would reccommend backing up all your data files then do a clean install of Win98
followed by the upgrade to SE.
Post back in a new thread if you have problems, but check out the link below for
some good suggestions on your project.

Marc,
If you have more than 1 driver listed for a device, open device Manager and remove
Both of the listed drivers, then shut down and reboot. Disabling the Driver will
not work in this instance.
If you do not have a driver for a device, go to the manufacturer's Web Site and see
if you can find one for your exact OS. Be sure to download installation info as well.
If you need help finding drivers post back with Make, Serial # and Model # of the
device.
I'm running eMachine 333i with Win98 upgraded to Win98SE and have used many different
monitors, including Flat Panel, with no problems. As far as the HDD, no specific
driver is required, as Win98SE has adequate drivers for the HDD unless you've installed
something very unique.

Judy,
You won't get much help tagging your problem onto someone else's thread. Please start
a thread of your own.

Click on this link, then click on "Start a New Message thread"of your own.

Well, Bob, I haven't had time to do anything about it yet, but plan to this weekend.
Your suggestion seems to be what I'm doing already. Not being an ingrate, here!
:) Perhaps, since my 'puter has been in use and has had many many changes/edits
of the registry, there's something in there that's been overlooked. Can anyone recommend
a good registry editor/troubleshooter? (As in; cheap or FREE) I'm familiar with
tweaking it, but identifying trouble items is a drain. For instance Quick Time somehow
came back from the dead and installed itself again! Oh well, maybe I'll be back
Monday... :)
Oh, as to monitor drivers; I bought a used monitor, the Magnavox, whose driver I
can't even find on the free drivers site.

marc,
If you'd post the info on your monitor, perhaps someone could help you find a driver
for it. Without info you're stuck with what you can find.
The best Registry tool I've found is available here "FREE".
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
Download RegSeeker from this site. It has a very good search function for finding
Registry entries related to removed software. Be sure to activate the restore feature.
It creates backups of removed items prior to deleting them.
Untill you've used RegSeeker a few times, it's a good idea to do an independant backup
of your registry before you run it. I've never had a problem with Reg seeker, but
with the Windows Registry, you can't be too careful.

Your magnovox was made by phillips, so you are on the right track there. Try looking
closely on the back of it.
That hardware (that's adding drivers) did leave entries in the registry, but I have
always cleaned that manually -- hence the "bypass" I gave you. If you are going to
try to fix the registry, back it up first; Search for the "Emergency Recovery Utility"
(Eru.exe) on this forum to try to find a download (It is on some win9x CDs).
