Hi, I get this error when selecting the Geforce tab in the advanced portion of the display settings on 98SE. I have a Geforce FX 5200 (in a p4 1.5g with 512mb ram). What is causing this error; I have the latest drivers installed but i always get this error.

sos,

C:windows\system\desk.cpl is a Control Panel file. What is the EXACT error message
you are getting? What kind of problems are you having with the Display?

First a small error box popus up with a yellow triangle and the exclamation mark inside just saying NVCPL and the click ok box. Click that and it brings up the error message: "an error occurred while windows was working with the file c:windows\system\desk.cpl"

sos,

Now that we know what type of problem you're having you'll probably get better information.

First go to Start>Find. In the Named box type "C:windows\system\desk.cpl". (no Quotes)
and enter C: in "look in", click find now.

The file should come up only in C:\Windows\System, size 217kb,dated 4\23\99. No problem
if it also shows in C:\Windows\sysbackup.

I suggest you run System File Checker and see if this file comes back as corrupted.
Be sure to have your Win98SE CD handy for restoring the file.

If you are not familiar with System File Checker, checkout this site.

http://help.stargate.net/general/sfc.shtml

Spend some time reading the instructions here so you'll know what to do when files
are shown as corrupted or deleted.

At any time if you do not understand or cannot figure out what to do, simply tick
the Ignore button and move on. The problem file will be there again next time you
run SFC.

Pay close attention to Version numbers. You always want to retain the NEWEST version
of the file if possible. Newest version will have the highest version Number. Sometimes
you can go by Dates, but this is not always available for every file. You have to
look closely at the Version Numbers. Sometimes the newer version is NOT readily appearant.
Be prepared to spend some time getting through all the files that SFC comesup with.
PATIENCE is a must.

Hope this helps. If not Post back with as much detail as possible.

SFC came up with no errors (at all in fact). I have checked the registry using the windows system tools as well as ccleaner and easy cleaner and found nothing. There is only one desk.cpl file and that is listed in the system folder of windows itself as it should be. All i can think of is that the nvcpl.dll file is corrupt which i believe it relates to. However there are two files with that name: 'nvcpl.dll' in windows/system, and 'NvCpl.dll' in c:\nividia\win9x\81.98.

I've done all that, however i assumed the file C:\nvidia was where the driver installation was located. Doesn't this contain all the control panel stuff?

SOS,

The Driver file is located at c:\nividia\win9x\81.98.
It appears that GForce has its own Control Panel applet contained in the Display
Properties, accessable by right-clicking the desktop, not the Windows Control Panel.
There are approx 19 .CPL files in Win98SE.

Right click MyComputer, click on properties, click device Manager. If there is a
yellow exclamation mark on Display Adapter, right click on the adapter and select
properties.

You may get info on the problem by exploring all the properties tabs. Sometimes there
are suggestions for resolving the problem.

If not, remove the display adapter by selecting "Remove" from the menu that pops
up when you right click on the GForce Display adapter. Shut down and restart the
Computer. This will force windows to redetect the display adapter and reinstall the
software.

The Nvidia Forum suggested NOT allowing windows to automatically install the driver,
rather doing it manually by telling Windows the location of the driver you want to
use. You'll need to write down this location exactly to make sure you enter the correct
path, or be able to find it by Browsing to the location. c:\nividia\win9x\81.98

Also write down the location of any new Downloaded driver you may want to use.

If this does not work, Post your problem at this forum.
