Modem problems

My 56k modem that came with my motherboard recently stop working for me. I've tried
reinstalling the driver for the modem and even reinstalling windows to get the modem
to work again but that didn't help. I've got another modem installed now, but windows
won't let me install the driver for the modem to try it out and see if it works ok
or not. I've also tried an external modem with doesn't want to detect a dial tone
either. Any ideas on what I can try to get a modem working on the computer again?
I'm using windows 98se.

Anthony,
Take a look at this site.
http://www.modemsite.com/56k/trouble.asp
You could try removing the modem in Device Manager and force Windows to redetect
the device & reinstall the software for it. Start with the onboard Modem.
Be sure to remove ALL modems in DeviceManager, then restart your computer. Yes I
mean ALL.

Try uninstalling your original modem drivers first.
Look in Control Panel - Modem. See if it shows the correct name on one of the COM
ports. If the old modem still shows then you still have the drivers installed. If
it shows the correct name then let it test your modem to see if there is a connection.
If you look in Network and right-click on your ISP connection and select properties
it should show you which modem is being used. I installed a new modem 8 months ago
and I couldn't get connected until I selected the new modem from Network.

Sorry I was at work with WinXP yesterday.
If you look in Dial-Up Networking in Explorer or My Computer and right-click
on your ISP connection and select properties it should show you in the General tab
- Connect Using, which modem is being used. I installed a new modem 8 months ago
and I couldn't get connected until I selected the new modem from Dial-Up Networking.
