My computer has suddenly started in booting not at all or in Safe Mode. I have a six week old backup drive so If I change the hard drive ID so my D: drive becomes my C: drive all is well. I just don't know what to copy to my original C:\ drive to make it boot properly. Any help??? Thanks for any guidance you can provide!!! Uncle Dewey

Actually Bob the search facility on here is very poor, in fact its s***. I've only made one topic in WinXP 8 months ago. I know what I wrote in my problem I saved it to a file. So I've done a search for phrases, keywords and it come up with everything else but my topic.

Annoyances search leaves much to be desired, as Keith noted. Going to Google directly
is more likely to yield results.

Normally, it's due to a driver problem, and duplicate devices only show up in Safe
mode. It's nothing serious. My old standby response for the locked in safe mode issue..

Are you sure it's Safe mode; does it say Safe mode in all four corners? IF it does
say Safe Mode in all four corners, you'll need to do some troubleshooting. Safe Mode
is a diagnostic mode.

You can check some things to find out, what's preventing Windows from booting normally.
Often it's a device driver problem. Check all your hardware devices to see whether
there are any problems. Go into Device Manager... right click My Computer - Properties
- Device Manager tab.

Check for any duplicate or problem devices (with exclamation points). If there are
any, delete ALL instances of that device. Reboot and Windows will detect new hardware
and reinstall the drivers for the device/s.

Other sources to check, if that doesn't help:

Once again, please post your reply ABOVE the post you're responding to, Keith! It's
really very simple.

I'm contacting Annoyances support about it, if you don't and can't be more considerate
of the rest of us.

Dewey,

What is a "Cranky" drive. Tell me you're not running a bad HDD! If so, that could
be the reason your System won't start normally. Just a thought.
