dual boot with 1GB ram

i have an athlon xp2500+. it's been running fine with 512 MB ram, with windows 98
and windows 2000 in dual-boot. i just installed 512 MB more ram, and now windows
98 will not boot. i understand that windows 98 will not work with too much ram. can
i somehow trick windows 98 and tell it to see only 512 MB of ram, so that i can still
use both systems?
(i could live without windows 98, but my children want it for some older games.)

Take out the extra memory and do the following, then put the extra memory back in:
(Borrowed from another website..)
Click START then select RUN and type in the text box "sysedit" (without the quotes)
and click the OK button. The system configuration Editor window will open which
will have 5 other windows within it.
Each windows has a title, so click on the one that says "c:\windows\system.ini" to
bring it to the front. Now scroll down until you see the entry
[vcache]
Normally it will have nothing under it. You need to type under it
MaxFileCache=256000 so that it looks like this...
[vcache]
MaxFileCache=256000
If you do not find the [vcache] entry then just do the above at the very bottom of
the entries so it is the last one. Then from the very top select FILE then select
Exit. The computer will ask you if you want to save the current changes, click
the YES button then the window will close and you are done. Now reset (restart)
the computer..

You (and Carl) have overstated the case.
Out of the box, 98 doesn't like it--but it can be tweaked.
C K hit the high points.
Here's a page I like on this: (One topic of many)

MaxPhysPage=30000

As shown in my signature, I have Windows 98 running on 768 MB RAM on one desktop
and 1 GB of RAM in the other.
You need to add the entry MaxPhysPage=30000 to the [386Enh] section
of (Windows)\System.ini , to limit the physical RAM used to 768 MB.
Since System.ini is only loaded in Normal Mode, this does mean that a Windows 98
PC with 1 GB of physical RAM will not boot in Safe Mode (or in Selective Startup
mode with "Load System.ini File" unchecked) unless some of the physical RAM is removed.
My 768 MB PC does boot into Win98 Safe Mode without a problem!
This page (http://thpc.info/ram/vcache98.html)
has some excellent information. Scroll down to the "Large RAM PC's" section near
the bottom.
From my tests when setting up others' PC's:
I did get Win98 to boot in Safe Mode on a PC with 1 GB of RAM when 64 MB was assigned
(by the BIOS) to integrated video (so Win98 'saw' 960 MB RAM), but the MaxPhysPage=30000
line was still needed to correct strange errors occuring in Win98 Normal Mode (biggest
of which was, no file downloads would happen from any browser, IE6, Firefox or Opera!)
The couple of times I've tried to run 2 GB of Physical RAM in a Win98 system, that
just kills 98 dead no matter what! 98 can only address 2 GB of RAM in total (physical,
plus the hard drive paging or 'swap' file), so that much physical RAM plus the AGP
aperature is something it can't deal with, 'tweaking' or not......
-------------------------------------------------------------
Athlon 1.1 - 768 MB RAM = 98SE & XP Home
Athlon 3000+ 64 - 1024 MB RAM = 98SE (@768 MB RAM) & XP Pro
IBM ThinkPad PIII 900 - 384 MB RAM = 98SE & XP Pro SP2
Windows 2000 Server in the basement

Different systems and different Win98 setups don't always require a limit on actual
RAM. I've had three or four dual booted (mostly Win98 with W2K) PCs with 1024 MBs
of RAM, and only one had that requirement.
