Can't install/run Windows 98

I have a computer not hooked up to the internet and installed windows 98. It tells me there is an "error in installing Explorer.exe to reinstall." I do that and still come up with the same message. When I click ok on need to reinstall it gives me a message that the required .DLL file, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\COMCTL32.DLL was not found. I have tried editing the system files by reentering Shell=Explorer.exe and still don't get anything different. I have tried at the DOS Command line C: WIN98_74.cab /S and still get the same. What do I need to do to fix this so windows 98 will run? Please help! Thanks Jill

I think I know what you were trying to do. What did *you* expect to happen?
(There is no *verb* in the command line you posted--among other problems.)

It sounds like you are trying to install Windows
from within a broken installation of Windows.
Perhaps you could describe your technique more fully--starting from the beginning.

The computer I am trying to get Windows 98 to run on actually ran before I let my niece use it for awhile. When I got it back it wouldn't run Windows 98 at all, don't know what she did. So I tried reinstalling Windows 98 and it tells me there was an error loading explorer.exe and to reinstall Windows 98, so I click ok. Then a dialog box says that the .dll file c:\windows\system\comctl32.dll can not be found. I have tried reinstalling Windows 98 again and continue to get the same dialog boxes. What can I do to fix this so the explorer.exe and the comctl32.dll file are there so Windows 98 will run?

Probably need to wipe the Drive clean with a Boot Floppy, and do a Clean Install. Lots of Web site have detailed Instructions, easy to find with Google.
