I was upgrading my old laptop from windows 98 to windows xp. The installation said it was successfully complete and was going to reboot on its own. After the reboot, windows will not open and it will not let me open in safe mode either. When I do open in safe mode I get the following response : Warning: Windows has detected a registry/configureation error. Choose, command prompt only and run SCANREG. The following file(s) are missing or corrupted: C:\windows\HIMEM.sys; C:\windows\DBLBUFF.sys; C:\windows\IFSHLP.sys. I have accepted that I need to reinstall windows and I will loose all my information, but I do not have the reistall disk for 98, only for XP. Even when I put the cd in the drive, it doesn't read it so I can't load it. Please can anyone help me? I just want my laptop back!

You need to set the CDrom as first Boot Device in the bios first. Then it should work, If not MS has exe file you can download from their Web site that will make a set of 6 boot Floppies. This allows older computers that won't boot to a CD to install Windows.

If you purchased a upgrade XP CD, then you will need to get your Hands on a old Windows install CD of some flavor. during the install XP will ask that you insert the old CD to see if it qualifies for upgrade.

Also look for problem a with lack of Driver support. Your Laptop sounds old enough that you may have trouble getting it to run with XP . You might visit the Laptop Maker Web site to see if Drivers were ever offered for XP
