Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module unknown

I have windows98fe with the free edition of Zone Alarm and AVG also loaded. Sometimes
on initial booting I found that after the Zone alarm screen was displayed the mouse
cursor 'froze' and when I tried to move it the system did an immediate reboot.
I also have 'cabrest' (registry restore program) so I did a registry restore at a
date prior to the zone alarm problem. This seemed to fix the zone alarm problem
but I then found that when I clicked on the 'start' button I got the message 'Explorer
has caused an invalid page fault in module unknown' also the start button menu looked
really weird (large and small icons and lines). Also most of the icons in the task
bar disappeared. On rebooting every thing is fine until I click on the start button
which just then repeats the problem outlined above. I have done virus checks with
both Spybot and AVG which both report nothing in the way of a virus. Has anybody
any idea what I can try next?

Regards
Mike

Problem seems to be fixed. I searched the internet without success to find a solution
to this problem. What seems to have worked in the end is that I restarted windows98
in safe mode and found there was no problem when I clicked on the start button to
close it down. When it rebooted in normal start up mode it seemed to redraw all
the desktop icons. It then seemed fine to click on the start button and everything
displayed as it should. Weird or what??
