freezes when opening folders or My computer

the browser seems to work fine; no probelms surfing the web. but trying to open My
documents or the like makes the whole system freeze.
The OS is windows 98SE; I've run spybot, CCCleaner and AVG (the free version) - all
found probelms that they supposedly fixed.
Also, when I run the defrag, it restarts frequently, claiming "the drive's contents
changed", altho I'm running it in safe mode and nothing else is running.

Good possibility you still have a Malware infection. I would visit and register on
one the Malware removal Forums, and run a more complete cleaning routine. These days
if your AV finds a few problems you probably got a lot more hidden Problems it can't
find.

Is there a malware-removal program in particular that you would recommend (for someone
on a tight budget)?

Most times getting a Computer cleaned up takes a bunch of steps, done in a particular
order, with mostly free software, and maybe some guidance in using Hijackthis This
forum is really more for general Windows issues, Browse the Google link for Forums
on Malware topics. You might get some other suggestions here also as more read the
post.

Hey.
1. B4 doing any further, back up all your important
personal files. If possible, check them 4 viruses on
other system.
2. Download Ad-Aware (the free version) from
Lavasoft.com. Install & run live update.
3. Run the program & select the full system scan.
It might find other threats that Spybot didn't.
4. B4 performing defrag or scandisk, do fresh reboot.
It cleans up the swap file & prevents the message U
get from appearing.
Also, turn AVG off (Quit AVG control center) B4 defrag.
5. Run Scandisk (thorough) & than Defrag.
6. If nothing helps & U can't get any answer from
any forum, U might need to reformat the HD & reinstall
Win 98.
7. When your system clean / reinstalled, check backed
up files.
Good luck.

If it doesn't actually freeze[1] but just bogs down unacceptably:
The short version:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1156192813
(Crap Cleaner qualifies as **or whatever**
and it will nuke this fix just like DELINDEX.BAT does.)
The long version:
cache of http://victor.januario.com/?q=windows_explorer_slow
++Micky.Dee+Windows.98.Explorer.Extremely.Slow
|the browser[...]
|
I'm assuming you are using Internet Exploder, 8-(
so I'll fix that phrase for you: the WORLD'S WORST browser.
[1] If you can walk away from the system
and it is back to working properly again after a long coffee break,
this DESKTOP.INI trick might be the fix.
(Do sweep your system for infections anyway.)

NO, the system freezes, doesn't just "bog down"
and I'm using IE 6.
