users connected to your PC

Hi. I have an annoying problem with my work PC. When i start up, the PC runs fairly
fast and good. I then notice that it slows down. I discovered that this will always
happen when i get a "user" on my machine. I go to shutdown and i get a message "There
are 1 user(s) connected to your computer. Shutting down your computer will disconnect
them. Do you want to continue".
What i want to know is...is there a way to tell who or what that user (or sometimes
up to 3 users) is? I don't have my PC set up as shared on the network. I do have
a printer connected to my PC that others on the network use. I tried disconnecting
the USB cable to the printer but my PC still had a user connected (ie, trying to
find who or what the user is).

Shared peripherals need other users to essentially "log in" to your machine. They
stay there until the session is closed or the user logs off/shuts down their machine
or the session times out. Other possibility is your machine is infected with malware
that is sharing your computer with unauthorized users over the internet/LAN. A serious
malware/antivirus scan may be in order with utilities looking for anything suspicious.
