Mouse Disappears on Sony VAIO Notebook

The Win 98 (SE) OS on my friend's Sony VAIO F-430 notebook (Pentium III) has lost
its mouse! During bootup, he gets an error message saying:
“Invalid VxDynamic link called from PELMOUSE (02) + 000010C to device “000C,” service
3 – Configuration is invalid.”
The mouse icon never appears.
How do we restore the mouse? We have the Win 98 Install CDROM, but can't restore
the mouse driver from it—can't find the keystrokes to do it.
I also assume the mouse can be restored via the OS Control Panel/Device Manager—but
that also requires a mouse, and keystrokes that I don't know about...
How can I restore the mouse in this situation?

Try safe mode first.
CTRL-ESC and arrows for start menu.
arrow to system in the control panel.
right arrow to open device manager.
two tabs to get on computer (big window)
down arrow to mouse, right arrow to expand, down arrow to the actual mouse.
tab to properties, 3 tabs to general, right arrow to driver, 2 tabs to change driver...
Basically use TAB and the arrows to navigate boxes. Your PELMOUSE reference indicates
he may have a special driver for that notebook. Best to find that file(s) before
digging through the troubled PC.
