Random game lock-up

I began playing Diablo 2 (after a long hiatus) again. I am experiencing random lock-up
during the game which I never experienced before. Nothing has changed (to my knowledge
anyway) on my system. I'll be playing and all of a sudden I hear the dreaded Windows
"doink" bell and the game freezes. There is no way to exit the game, so I must pull
the plug to have the comp reboot. I ran DXDIAG, everything is fine, and I'm running
the latest supported version. I ran the Diablo 2 video check, and it said that I
am fine with the video. I tried disabling/exiting everything in the tool tray except
for systray and explorer, that didn't work. I haven't tried a reinstall of the game
yet since I really shouldn't have to - it worked fine before and I've changed nothing.
I'm sort of out of ideas, any help would be appreciated.

I think I see your big problem.

Hey! Look, everyone.
A guy whose never seen something get spontaneously corrupted on a Windoze box.

In addition, something that is **random** is, by definition, not troubleshootable.
Some kind of *pattern* is necessary to make a hypothesis.
