Cannot write to drive C

Sue Smith
I have recently been getting this message when I start up the computer. I get
the desktop and after about 30 seconds it switches off and I get the message "Cannot
write to Drive C. I just press any key and the desktop returns and I can then proceed
as normal. Occasionally the computer will again switch itself off and on start
up prompts me to run scandisk.
I use my computer for photography and have recently been deleting a lot of image
files and defragging having filled my hard disc up. I have also restored a few
system files from my Windows 98SE CD which had been lost.
Recently I had a suspect email (with no attachment) and when I clicked on it to
delete it several windows came up with a message something like "program installation
failed". I wonder if this has anything to do with my recent problem.
I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.
NB: I notice that my previous post about problems with my Apacer is still shown,
please ignore that as I have solved that problem.
Thank you,
Sue
I am unable to disable the 'read only' box in Windows Explorer Properties on photoes
written to CD from memory card on my Apacer Steno CP200 which I want to maniuplate
in Photoshop. Can anyone help?

Hi Sue.
This sounds a bit virus orientated.
Which virus checker do you use?
You can set AVG to scan in coming emails. I would do a full virus check if I were
you.

You don't loose system files unless something deletes or corrupts them.

You really put a burden on the volunteers.
Had you ever LOOKED at one of your own posts you would know they look like blobs:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1188980603
(Not
that they should.)
If, before posting again,
you made sure the **No preview** box near the bottom of this page
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/config
is NOT ticked, you could see what your posts look like
BEFORE submitting them.
(A really BAD choice of defaults[1] on the part of the Webmaster.)
WRT the **Check this box to preserve your spacing** thing,
where the posting page says
**Don't use this option unless you really need it**,
it should say
**Use this option unless you know how to format a paragraph with HTML**.
I suggest that anyone who doesn't know how to do that
(or who knows how but is unwilling to) should tick the box when posting.

Again, more difficult than necessary for us to figure out what you are talking about.
A link to that would be useful.
(At the bottom of all pages on this site is a **Find my most recent posts** link.)
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum_search?user=1121270907&requested=win98
...then use the QuickLink button.
Your previous problem was about you trying to write to READ-ONLY media (CD-ROMs).
Hard drives are NOT read-only media.
Keith's **infection** notion sounds probable to me.
Your hard disk could also be in its death throes.
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1126898454
(See "thorough".)
If your data isn't backed up, RIGHT NOW would be a prudent time to do that.
Another cause might be a full-up root directory:
Some people allow ungodly amounts of files (not just *folders*)
to be put in C:\ . BAD IDEA.
The MyDocuments paradigm of Win9x should have cured this
--but some folks are stubborn/uninformed.
[1] Actually, it's the Webmaster's text-to-HTML converter that sucks.

Thanks Keith,
I use Norton Antivirus 2006. I did run a virus check and nothing has shown up.
I may uninstall the Norton Antivirus and reload it in case it has been corrupted
by a virus.

Try to stick to 1 topic per thread.
All of this was detailed in your previous thread.
Go back and read it again.

I posted this message about 2 years ago and thanks to the help I received the problem
is solved. When I put my latest query on the site however, the old query was somehow
tagged onto the end of my message. I didn't know how to get rid of it so I attached
an NB to my note to say ignore the second query. Perhaps you can tell me how to
get rid of it?
Thanks,
Sue

While you were at
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/config
you should have cleared out the Footer dialog box.
Why is everyone in such a hurry to leave that page?
...instead of READING it?

First I would say as some of the forum members have said that your C Drive may be
full therefore it might be a good idea to back up your flies on floppy disks to lighten
the load of Drive C, and makes your PC loads faster too, frees up the memory.
Second have you installed new software or hardware that may be in conflict to your
PC?
The other problem is :
When you upgrade your computer to Windows 98, you may receive the following error
messages:
Disk write error, unable to write to disk in drive C, data or files may be lost
-or-
An exception 0E has occurred @ 0028:C0035A67 in vxd ifsmgr (01)
After receiving these error messages, your computer stops responding (hangs).
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you have a Linksys EtherFast 10/100 network adapter in
your computer. The EtherFast network adapter can cause a resource conflict with Windows
98 PCI Steering.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, modify the resources of the EtherFast network adapter so that
it no longer conflicts with Windows 98 PCI Steering. To modify the resources of your
EtherFast network adapter, consult the adapter's documentation or contact Linksys
for more information.
To work around this issue, disable the EtherFast network adapter. To do so, use the
following steps:
1. Restart your computer. Press and hold down the CTRL key until you see the Windows
98 Startup menu.
2. Choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu.
3. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
4. Double-click System.
5. Click the Device Manager tab, and then double-click the Network Adapters branch
to expand it.
6. Right-click the EtherFast adapter, and then click Properties.
7. On the General tab, click the Disable In This Hardware Profile check box to select
it.
8. Click OK, and then click Close.
9. Restart your computer.
NOTE: After you disable your network adapter, you cannot use any shared network programs,
files, or printers.
Bye

Replace the ribbon connecting harddisk to motherboard. Maybe the Master Boot Record
is corrupted. You could try rewriting the MBR from the install cd.
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repa...ot%20Sec tor:
You could also use a tool from your hard drive manufacturer to diagnose the drive
to make sure. Flashing the motherboard would be the final thing I would try if the
problem persists.
