I need to prevent users from making changes, w98 lockdown

I need to secure several W98SE PC's from end users deleting/installing software, changing settings and password protect shutdown, etc... I know TweakUI has some functions, but not enough. Unless I'm missing something? Or do I need some other software?

Anything DOS-based has pretty rotten "security".
You can *improve* the miserable default-install "security" a bit.

An NT-based OS is marginally better--but the "security" of anything Micros~1 produces
can easily be defeated with a bootable Linux CD / thumbdrive.

If you are looking for REAL security,
you are going to have to break the M$ mindset and get something UNIX-based.
(Security-wise, an out-of-the-box Ubuntu Linux install beats anything MSFT ever devised
--even after Windoze has been "thoroughly" tweaked.)

The Linux Live Boot CD's even make access to Folders on a Hard Drive installed Linux PC pretty easy. I used Puppy Linux Live CD for about a year on a SuSE Computer, and would just mount the SuSe Drive to access the Home Folder when I wanted something. I kind of wonder if any unencrypted data is really safe from a Live CD

Thanx for your replies, but *nix is not an option in this case nor is hard core security an issue. We are trying to teach kids typing and some basic computer skills and need an MS environment. I just need to stop them from hosing the environment they're supposed to be learning. I know it's possible, my previous employer used W98 systems for time clocks and had it tamper proof.

Deep freeze seems to address the issue you posted, unfortunately it's not free.
Check the link below.

Good luck.

Hi Curt.

Well you can change thing in the registry that will stop user accessing certain areas.
There was a program called RegTune.exe that used to allow you to change these settings
for you. But anyone could use this program if you know where its located.

I program in Visual Basic and I've made a program that has the same features RegTune.exe
but with mine you can have a username and a password to access these options.

RegTune.exe it isn't
free but if you do a search you will find some crack serial numbers.

WIndowsguard is free and a fairly effective deterrent from any one making changes on your computer, also, there is some desktop locking software out there. live Linux live cd's are tough but most people don't use or know about them.

True.

Yet more easily-defeated pseudo-security.

WindowsGuard will do what you need and it is free. I'm not sure why the suggestion
that WindowsGuard is not secure is in the previous post.

The link provided in that post has a comment from a user of the program that,

"Protection is easily bypassed by opening Task Manager and killing the wgpro.exe
process"

That may seem to suggest that WindowsGuard is not secure but further reading shows
that to be wrong. The very next comment at that link says,

"To fix that, just add 'Windows Task Manager' to the blocked programs list."

Sounds good to me! I think I'm going to download WindowsGuard (It's FREE!) to use
on my kids' computer.
