permanetly deleting programs from ctrl-alt-del

I'm seeking help to find out how to disable programs that are in ctrl-alt-del as the system I am working on boots extremely slow. I've tried numerous suggestions mentioned in the postings here (some worked); however there are 2 programs msgloop.exe and msg.exe that are not listed in msconfig/startup to uncheck, I tried finding them in win.ini file with no luck. I tried going to regedit HKEY Machine/software/ms/windows/current version and looked in the run, run-, runonce, runservices and nothing there soooooooo do you have any other suggestions to try? when I did a file search it found these exe. files in c:windows\system, c:windows\temp\Riptide..., and in c:\windows\options\cab I wasn't sure if entries in these could be deleted safely from running in background, without affected the audio feature altogether. From what I found out, these are from Riptide Audio that's on the system. The Riptide Audio is listed in add/remove programs, but I don't want to uninstall it, just don't have these running in the background. Hope this wasn't too confusing - my brain is scrambled :-) Thanks for any help and thanks for this website, I've gotten lots of valuable help here

Hi Shirl,

I can't give you the exact answer because I've stopped using Win98 but I had a third-party
freeware utility which was able to show all the starup items and show where they
were launched from, and allow you to delete the relevant registry entries safely
(with a backup to go back to if there is a problem).

The utility was either RegCleaner or EasyCleaner - I had and used both, I just can't
remember for certain which one had that particular function, but I think it is EasyCleaner.
You will find it at this link:

http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm

and if you also want RegCleaner, that is at:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/RegCleaner_d460.html

Hope this helps,

Alan

STOP PROGRAMS RUNNING AUTOMATICALLY AT STARTUP

If you have too many programs running automatically at startup DO NOT attempt to edit the Registry directly. That way leads to tears before bedtime.

1. Go to:

START > PROGRAMS > STARTUP

and delete the shortcuts there.

2. Disable programs using System Configuration Utility:

Click on START then on RUN, and in the "Open" box that pops up type MSCONFIG then click "OK", to open the System Configuration Utility.

Click its STARTUP tab. On that tab, untick the entry for the troublesome program(s), then click "OK". Restart your computer. The program(s) will no longer load automatically on startup.

If this proves to be a problem, go into the System Configuration Utility again, re-tick the entry for that program, click "OK", and restart the computer. The program(s) will then run on startup automatically every time, as before.

I did go there and found out what they are and what they do, but it did not tell me how to get rid of these (without buying the registry booster/mechanic, which I am going to do. Just thought I'd try to learn how to do these manually without the added expense. Thanyou for the input, always grateful for the feedback.

Here is a pretty good program I use: "RegSeeker" .It is a free program I use for long time now and it can beat many of the paid programs.Using it on my XP PC and Vista lapdog also. After uninstalling any program. Stay away from those popups offers to" Scan your system and repair your registry"90% of them are BSing and too often they do harm. Download RegSeeker from here. Don't delete this: c:\windows\options\cab.

software to delete registry entries

Personally I wouldn't go out and buy anything for this purpose, until I'd tried out
the freeware options.

Registry editors are widely available, and the cost of the one you've mentioned is
probably not worth it.

Incidentally there are also other sites you can go to to discover what software uses
any particular dll files, etc.
