Hi, I have a Trust MI4100 wireless mouse, no Drivers. It works straight away on XP but not on Win98SE. Trust say a Driver is not needed for 98SE What do I need to do? cheers Bill

USB or PS2 connection? Basic functions will not need an added driver and should
work fine on Win 98SE. Depends on whether the machine is seeing the receiver or
not, or the driver is correct for the receiver. That may be the problem that has
to be sorted out first..

Hi, it is USB with a plug in dongle. System Properties shows a HID Driver in the Mouse properties but not joy.

Check the device manager for the USB drivers being installed and running. Win 98
has some issues and may not be installed, where SE and ME may not have an issue.
In some cases, I have seen USB units not work at all in 98, but would work in ME.
 Not sure why.

1. Compatible USB version?

Windows 98 only has built-in support for USB 1.1. A USB device that is designed to work with both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 will work, but only at USB 1.1 speeds.

Therefore check whether your USB device is designed to work with USB 1.1 (i.e. look on the box), because if the box says it is designed for USB 2.0 only then it won't work with Win98.

The device must be *specifically* stated to be for USB 1.1 (whether or not it is also for USB 2.0) in order to work with Win98.

To use a USB 2.0 device in Win 98 you must buy an add-in USB 2.0 PCI Card, which must be one with a USB 2.0 driver file for Win98SE.

2. Try manually updating the driver.

If the above hasn't solved the problem, try this instead :

Highlight the USB device in Device Manager, and click PROPERTIES, and go through the procedure for manually updating the driver. Manufacturers typically supply several driver files, and it is possible you have used the wrong one.

The locations to point the update function / wizard to, when trying to find the correct file, are:

C:\WINDOWS
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
C:\WINDOWS\IOSUBSYS
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS

An alternative: Delete the device's entry in Device Manager, and reboot. On the reboot be sure to have the device plugged into the computer. The plug-and-play wizard will automatically re-install the device with the correct driver(s), if they exist on your system.

thanks Ed., it appears I can't use a USB2 device on my old Dell 3800 laptop.
