possible virus

I keep getting this message when I try to install a new program:
This program has been damaged, possibly by a bad sector of the hard drive or a virus.
Please reinstall it.
Have any suggestions?

Hi Charles.
That seems pretty obvious.
Have you done a full virus check and a full Scandisk and Defrag?
Which virus checker are you using?
Is it a genuine CD that you are installing this program from?

This only happened a week ago. My programs that were already installed were not
infected. When I try to install a new program from a cd or a downloaded file this
message comes up (This program has been damaged......) or another message (This program
has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down).
I have Scan disk, defraged (No bad sectors) system file checker, twice and everything
seems to be okay.
I use AVG 7.1, Norton version for Win98, Registry Fix, Xoftspy and Registry Mechanic
all from a CD. I have downloaded Bug Doctor, Error Doctor. All of them said this
computer is free from a virus. It just seems so simple to find but maybe I am not
looking in the right place. I have deleted most of the programs mentioned above
and reinstalled. Still the same thing. I ran HiJack This. Everything seemed to
be okay.
This little bug is very tricky.

Have you tried copying the contents of the CD to your hard drive and installing?
That's the best way to do it. Do you have Spybot S&D or Ad-Aware installed? Reason
I ask is you really should get help on a malware support forum and have them check
your HJT log.
If you can't install anything new, it might be difficult to get this sorted. I'm
not familiar with Error Dr. or Bug Dr., but there are a lot of rogue programs out
there. I'd get rid of them. You don't need any so-called Doctor programs that promise
to fix errors. Also, avoid Google sponsored ads.
Xoftspy was previously on the list of Rogue Anti-spyware, and those aren't recommended.
I suggest you get rid of that too. Seems the only reputable apps you've used are
Registry Mechanic, AVG and HJT! You're running Norton AND AVG?? Not good.

If you have both Norton and AVG installed, you need to get rid of one of them, and
btw Norton's a terrible resource hog. Aside from that, I doubt some of those junk
programs you have installed are helping anything.
I don't s'pose you have the latest version HTJ installed, 2.0.2? If not, you could
try the .Zip d/l. I'll have a look at your HJT log. Clear out your temporary folders,
including Windows\temp folder.
Trend Micro HijackThis™
Create a new folder to move 'HJT' to. It creates backups of all items fixed, and
they're automatically saved in the same location. Place it in your root dir or Program
Files folder, whichever you choose. Example: C:\HJT\ or C:\HijackThis\, etc.
Run HijackThis.exe. Choose "Do a system scan and save a logfile". Once the scan is
finished, the log will automatically open in Notepad. Select All and copy/paste the
entire log in a post. *Don't fix anything yet.
