Iexplore error window will not go away

I cannot get the Iexplore error window to close, it says it has performed an illegal operation and must close and there is a button for CLOSE and a button for DETAILS, but it will not close. I have even shut down my computer for several minutes but when I turn it on again, the message box is still on my screen...How do I get rid of it? What caused it? I clicked on details and this is what it says: "IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0197:bff9db61. Registers: EAX=c0030b7c CS=0197 EIP=bff9db61 EFLGS=00010216 EBX=0413fe28 SS=019f ESP=0403fe44 EBP=040400e0 ECX=00000000 DS=019f ESI=00000000 FS=1397 EDX=bff76855 ES=019f EDI=bff79198 GS=0000 Bytes at CS:EIP: 53 8b 15 e4 9c fc bf 56 89 4d e4 57 89 4d dc 89 Stack dump:" Thanks for any help, Portia

1. Closing a Program -

To close any running program press these 3 keys on the keyboard simultaneously: CTRL, ALT and DEL

This will bring up the Close Program dialogue box. Highlight the program to be closed by clicking on it with the mouse, and then click "End Task".

2. Repairing Internet Explorer 6 -

If you use Internet Explorer 6, check in the Add/Remove programs list (START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL > ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS)for an entry "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and Internet Tools" and see if it is there. If it is you can do a REPAIR of Internet Explorer.

To REPAIR IE, double click the Add/Remove Programs icon and select (highlight) the entry for "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and Internet Tools" and then click the Add/Remove button at the bottom of the window. In the options window, select the "Repair Internet Explorer" option and click "OK". When it is done shut down normally and restart the computer.

Alternatively, look in the C:\Windows folder for a folder named "Window Update Setup Files" and find in it the program IE6SETUP.EXE and, if there, you should be able to run IE6SETUP and reinstall IE6.0 that way.

3. Re-registering the system DLL files -

Try this if the above doesn't solve the problem. Go to START > RUN and then type:

  regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Press Enter. You should see a brief message that the dll has been successfully registered.

Do the same with the following, one at a time, pressing enter after each:

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll

Then download and install this Microsoft patch, which will install DLL files that are compatible with Win98:

  MCREPAIR.EXE

Answer YES when prompted to replace a Newer file with an Older version.

Those are not symptoms of a broken IE. Your system's very likely picked up a malware
infection, so I suggest you go through some preliminary cleaning steps and post on
a malware forum for further help. You'll need to register, but it's free.

Post on only one forum. Good luck.

To help prevent future malware infections, Stop using IE as your main browser.
Switch to a more secure, less malware prone browser as your main browser. IE is extremely
vulnerable to malware infections. Firefox and Opera are recommended alternatives
by security experts.

Additionally, use a HOSTS file. See the link below for more info.
