Windows 98 registry/configuration error

The problem that I'm having with my PC, whenever I boot it up, it goes straight to
the MS Windows 98 Startup Menu and it's saying that a registry/configuration error
has been detected. Choose, Command prompt only, and run SCANREG. How can I solve
this problem on my own.

What happened when you followed the directions you were given?
You **did** write down what it said and **did** follow that EXACTLY. Right?
If you haven't waited too long to seek out help,
you may be able to use one of the 5 (by default) Registry backups.

At the C: prompt, try the following solution.
Type this (on a single line), then press the ENTER key -
SCANREG /FIX /OPT
Note the space before each of the forward slashes.

I've mentioned before that a forward slash is a valid delimiter in DOS.
There is no need for additional whitespace.
