Usb flash drive, Verbatim, 2GB

I recently got a Verbatim 2GB lash drive, however I need to find a driver for Win98 (4.10.1998) on a Compaq Presario 5000 BW. I could really use the extra storage space. Any tips out there? Thanks for your help. Mike Crane

Just for future info, Michael, the U-storage driver, which you can download from many sites, is very close to being a universal flash memory stick driver. I've used it with maybe 10-15 different sticks over the last few years and I haven't yet found one that it doesn't work with.

This should not be surprising. Regardless of brand, all memory sticks are designed to the same standard. When a driver works for one but not another, it's almost certainly because it has been tailored very precisely to a particular model spec.

Well Alan I have 4 Kingston and 3 PQI USB flash drives and each size needs different drivers. I've tried the Windows 98 USB Mass Storage Device Drivers but can't get them to work. I recently bought a Kingston 2Gb drive and the drivers for that allow me to access the other 3 Kingston drives. You will find when gewg_ reads this he will make a comment about these Windows 98 USB Mass Storage Device Drivers, he's used them and found they work.

Is that the lash drive you have to tie to the top of your car
or the one that hits you with a bullwhip? 8-)

Ah. This old chestnut.

I don't think Keith burned his offerings to the USB gods
in quite the proper way. ;-)
I almost never see a failure report WRT these "universal" drivers
and Keith's report of *mass failure* is unique in my observation.

Yup. The attempt here is to make a "universal" device driver.
The one Keith mentioned is from Maximus Decim and is a good one.
Nathan Lineback has an even better one (covering even more devices/brands).

Well, kinda: "model" is right; "spec" isn't.
More specifically:
What is missing from those drivers is **that** device's *Plug 'n' Play ID number*.
Capitalism being what it is, a manufacturer isn't going to go to any trouble
to assure the data for the gear of *his competition*
is included in the driver he supplies for *his* gear.

Hackers (such as the 2 mentioned) have no dog in this fight,
so they put EVERYTHING THEY CAN FIND into their personal versions.

I don't even recommend farting around with the manufacturers' drivers;
go get the **universal** one straight away.
Only if that doesn't work do I advise looking on the mfr's site.
