I have Pentium 3, Windows 98 SE and ther is no sound on my PC. I tested skeakers and they are o.k. Multimedia properties is gray-out in audio devices ther is a list of devices like audio, wave, on audio properties status is: "Driver is enabled but inactive do to unknown problems". I look at system properties in device maneger under sounds, video and game controler ther is all o.k., no yellow ! or red X all drivers are install and updated, I look in System Information under problem devices ther is nothing listed, I download program aida32 hardware diagnostic tool to see if ther is any hardware conflict and again all test show ther is no problem. I removed multimedia and reinstall but there is no change. Can any one tell me what to look for in order to fix that problem. Sincerely, Majda.

If you have deleted then reinstalled the device drivers
for ALL the things that may be causing a problem,
this makes me wonder if your sound card (hardware) is still OK.

Thank you for answer, I did all again and again, 3 times what was suggested in the web sites that you send to me but no change, multimedia is still gray-out and no sound, I download new driver for CMI8738/C3DX media and the only thing I managed to get is a sound for cd-rom to listen my CDs, with direct x I test direct music with C-media wave device and I got a sound, but when testing direct sound there ware no sound and this error: No driver. Why I can hear cd plying and sound test with directx but I can hear wave and other sound files? When I try to listen to wave file with windows media I get this error: Can not play back audio stream no audio hardware is available or a hardware is not responding, from windows media player error center I got this message: There is no sound card and Error ID = 0x80040256, Remedy ID = 0x00000000. Microsoft support web site does not give me much help for windows 98 problems and in help sound troubleshooter no answer to my problem. In device manager in sound, video controller there is a CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device, Game Port Joystick and Wave Device for Modem all devices are working properly. In Multimedia Properties the PCI Audio device in Pctel serial wave device have this status: Driver is enabled but inactive do to unknown problem. In Multimedia in audio under preferred device the is:No playback device and No recording device. I don't know much about computers, when I have problem I always search for answers in forums or search web sites for solutions but I need help, I don't know, do I need sound card or just driver download and what driver I need or what audio hardware I need to download ? and a few month ago my modem lost its dialing sound. Thank you again. Sincerely, Majda

I have been hit by a similar problem Majda, running Win98SE. The box to click to
put the yellow speaker icon on the taskbar, in the Multimedia tool in Control Panel,
is greyed out.

The speaker images that sit to the left of the Playback and the Recording options
in that Multimedia option are also greyed out (normally they are clickable), and
the drop-down list next to them does NOT show my Realtek AC97 Audio device as an
option, even though it is listed in Device Manager as working normally.

I deleted everything under Sound Video and Game Controllers in Device Manager, in
SAFE mode, as suggested. Everything reinstalled, but this did not cure the fault.
I then tried reinstalling DirectX, but with no better luck. Still no sound.

When I try to play Winamp, a wav file, it gives an error: MMSYSTEM004 error. That
error message says that another device is already playing audio. But I think Windows
is just confused. Rebooting and starting only Winamp, before anything else (with
nothing starting up in the StartUp folder), gives the same message.

Also, the program C:\WINDOWS\SNDVOL32.EXE will NOT run when double-clicked. The Realtek
software indicates that that file controls the yellow speaker icon. Majda, do you
have this same fault with Winamp or with SNDVOL32.EXE?

I suspect something has broken in the Multimedia settings, but when I tried reinstalling
Multimedia using the "Add/Remove Programs" tool in Control Panel (Windows Setup)
it did not fix it.

I asked a knowledgeable friend. He showed me how to download a program called Dependency
Walker, and he gave me a complicated demonstration of it. It showed that SNDVOL32.EXE
was missing certain files that it relies on. APPHELP.DLL and USERENV.DLL were listed
as missing, and OLE32.DLL is listed with this error message - "Warning: At least
one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in a delay-load
dependent module", whatever that means!

My friend's expertise ended with demonstrating the program. He isn't familiar with
Win98 and couldn't suggest how to cure the problem. I thought he'd done rather well
to get that far.

But I wondered if anyone on this forum could suggest anything?

Regards,
Ken

Hello Ken, thank you for your answer and thank you for letting me know about very usefull program Dependency Walker, I don't have Winamp and SNDVOL32.EXE doas not respond, I use Dependency Walker to see what files are missing in sndvol32.exe, Dependency Walker program show that 13 *.dll file are missing, I download them all and than I got this message:"Warning: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in a delay-load dependent module". I search other forums from meny web sites and I come across that meny people have some or similar problems regarding sound but ther is no right answer for our sound problem. I hope one day some one will come with right solution. Sincerely Majda.

A little more research has established that the "missing export function" error message
usually means that a dll file in the system is not a Windows 98 file. This seems
to indicate that Windows 98 has acquired some WinNT or WinXP files.

On checking, I discovered that one of the files I was getting this error with was indeed marked as a WinXP service pack 2 file, on its Properties tab. I tracked down and replaced all the WinXP files I could find, renaming them in Safe Mode from .DLL to .XP and replacing them from my Win98 installation CD. But my system then wouldn't boot up. It got quite close once, but Explorer crashed at the last. There are obviously more XP files lurking about that I haven't been able to find. I finally gave up, and restored the troublesome XP files. My problem really stems from the Realtek AC97 Audio device driver. The original installation of that device was satisfactory, but a subsequent upgrade has installed a version that deleted the registry entries for SNDVOL32.EXE and substituted the Realtek driver, instead of them both coexisting as they had done before. Thus, removing the Realtek driver did not restore the sound, because the original registry entries were gone. My solution was to go back to the registry as it existed when I bought the PC, which still existed on the hard disk as various backup files scattered across the disk (named AUTOEXEC.1ST, CONFIG.1ST, MSDOS.SY_, SYSTEM.1ST, USER.1ST, SYSTEM.IN_, and WIN.IN_). I replace the corrupted registry while in Safe Mode, then reinstalled my hardware/peripherals on reboot, and finally reinstalled my software programs. There must, I suppose, be a way to recreate the registry entries that support SNDVOL32.EXE - but after quite a lot of trying I couldn't find how to do that.

I'll bet that it DID "boot up".
cache of http://unixhelp.ed.ac.uk/glossary/gb.html

What it DIDN'T do is "load Windoze" completely.

At any point did you consider SFC? System File Checker does have its caveats
cache of http://www.rickrogers.org/sfc.htm
but it sounds like you were really up against it in trying to avoid a reinstall.

I'll point to SFC again.

Yeah. That's pretty much the definition of "desperate".

With an M$ OS, you sometimes have to see the wisdom of the shorter route:
just bite the bullet and reinstall. 8-(
ISTM you will end up doing just as much work (perhaps more) WRT installed apps
compared to what you would have had to do with a fresh install.
Are you not finding that?

The Webmaster's defaults here are moronic IMO.
If you make sure the **No preview** box near the bottom of this page

is NOT ticked, you could see what your posts look like
BEFORE submitting them.

One quirk of the way this site is scripted is:
an "On" (capitalized) which starts a line will result in 4 linefeeds preceding it.
It also screws up subsequent blockquoting.

Doing something like this
.On
(starting that line with a non-alphabetic character) will override this
