Loss of free space after attempting to setup windows over existing folder

After a power cut due to weather, I could not restart computer. I tried scanreg/restore without success. So I did Windows setup over existing folder. Everything went normally, until the setup of existing hardware on computer The setup then ceased with message of fatal error.so I ran setup again, at the same position I again got same message. Using startup disk,I could not find any solution. After a rest,I tried scanreg/restore again and this time it worked. The problem now is that apparently there is now a temporary file made during the attempted setups that has used up 300MB's of my free space. To restate, I have now 300MB's less free space than before. How can I get my free space back to normal? I will be grateful for any answers or possible solutions. reuven

Sounds like it may have something to do with the option you selected when you installed
Windows over Windows. If you left yourself the option of uninstalling the new Windows
installation and reverting back to your previous Windows installation, the old installation
will be backed up on your hard drive. I don't remember where the files are stored
exactly but I recall installing Windows over Windows years ago resulting in a hefty
chunk of hard drive space being taken up by the uninstall information.

Run "Disk Cleanup" and make sure the box next to "Uninstall information" is checked
and click OK. It will delete the backed up old Windows installation.

Set up your file manager to display file extensions.
Now, what is the name and the extension of this huge file?
I'm betting it's FILE00xx.CHK.

If you have opened up a bunch of your data files and they all look OK,
you could just delete the backup file which SCANDISK made.

If you have any doubt about the integrity of your data files,
copy the backup file to external media before deleting it.
(Getting useable data out of it will be a major pain,
but at least the data won't be lost.)

...and, if having 300MB of HDD space used up puts a crimp in your computing,
you need to do some SERIOUS disk maintenance.

Thank you gewg.I have rechecked these files , as I periodically empty these files, but they only contain kb's not Mb's. You are right , and I am in the process of deciding on an extra hard disk. at the moment I have only 80 GB's. But that is in the future.I am not sure what size my installation ,Windows98se and mother board ,will support.
