I tried to update my computer to Windows XP and I couldn't finish the update because there was a missing "COMMAND.COM" file. I copied the filed using a Windows 98 bootdisk I downloaded from the internet. Now I get another error and it looks like this:

The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\HIMEN.SYS There is an error in your CONFIG.SYS file on line 6

The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\CDROM\OAKCDROM.SYS There is an error in your CONFIG.SYS file on line 7

The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\HIMEN.SYS

The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\DBLBUFF.SYS

The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS

C:\>REM [Home Series] Cannot find WIN.COM, unable to continue loading windows

Sounds like you should be posting to the XP forum
where there is a greater chance that you will find others who have done that.

I don't run XP, but that makes no sense to me.
"[F]inish the update" sounds like you got the the point where you reboot.
At that point, I would think XP's Command Processor would take over
--and *that* is NOT named COMMAND.COM.

If the XP install is looking for a previous install of 98,
why don't you just GIVE it that?  ISTM, the fastest way would be
do a Custom install of 98 and leave virtually everything out.
You're going to cream it all later anyway.  Right?

...and if you can't do a legit install of 98,
you definately have no call to be posting here.

Disconnect all exterior Devices like Printers, Scanners etc. Boot From the XP CD, and do a clean install. Delete the old Partition, Create New one, Format, and the install Starts. In about a hour you will be at the Desktop. Then go to Device Manager, Find, and install Missing Drivers. If Your Computer won't boot from the XP CD, check the Bios, and changed the Boot order.

If you have an update version of XP, and do a clean install, it will ask for proof 
of a prior qualifying operating system.  All it wants is for you to insert a 98, 
98SE, ME CD for a few seconcds.  Once it conirms the existance of such a CD, it will 
then ask you to re-insert the XP CD and continue with the installation.

A few other notes on a clean install of XP.

1.  First, run the XP Upgrade Advisor, free from Microsoft.  Fix/treat/handle anything 
it flags as a potential problem in either hardware or software.

2.  For example, you may a newer antivirus, CD\DVD writing software, etc.  Or, you 
might need more RAM, disk space, etc.

3.  XP is more sensitvie about drivers than is 98, so besure that you have a full 
set downloaded and on CD.  These normally come form the mothrboard maker, or PC maker 
if a major brand.  

4.  You may also need new drivers for printers, scanners, etc.  But, those are not 
criticla to the installation and intial booting of XP, so you can play with them 
later.  But, be aware that older hardware may not have XP drivers available, and 
you could be stuck with the semi-generic drivers that come with XP.  These usually 
work, but may not support all functions of a given piece of hardware.

5.  If RAID, SCSI, or SATA hard drives, the XP drivers must be on a floppy, not on 
a CD.  They come form the motherboard maker, not the hard drive maker.

6.  When making user accounts in XP, make one normal user for casual web browsing, 
since virus and other malware will be more limited in their abilities, if they enter 
via such an account.  But also make at least one administrator account, to perform 
software installations and updates.  XP has a spare administrator account, which 
is normally hidden, but it is more convenient to have your own.

7.  If the installation is mostly successful, but you can not boot into the desktop, 
try hitting F8 during the XP boot process to get into safe mode.  That uses generic 
drivers for everything, turns off non-esssential services and programs, and is a 
place to go for installing things like video and sound drivers, but only if you can 
not reach the noraml XP desktop.
