Proper capitalization and punctuation is appreciated in this forum.
(...and the names of **files** have *extensions*.)

There is nothing critical to Windows 98 in \windows\system32 .
Windoze should still load.
When he figures out which of his programs is broken, he should reinstall that.

If Windoze doesn't load, he needs to reinstall Windows
(after he was monkeying around with it, deleting files).

If he's in a position to do so (the OS is still working in a way he can use it),
he should borrow an install CD and copy it to his HDD.
He should also figure out his Windows Product key NOW.

Otherwise, it's time to spend some money.

I'm guessing that the same (no disks) holds true for his nuked app.
This sounds like the kind of person for whom *paid* tech support exists.

This guy's problem sounds like an XP problem.

There is an extensionless file named SYSTEM located inside the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\config\
folder in Windows XP. It is the system hive where all the registry information is
stored.

I have not yet come across a subfolder named \config\ inside the \SYSTEM32\ folder
in Win98.

It makes me wonder what the kids were doing on dad's computer, installing something
"cool" one of their friends downloaded from the internet no doubt.
