I have to turn the power off to get my wife's old Win 98 OS to shut down. Can you give me some advice as to how this annoyance can be overcome? Thank you Hilton

With difficulty in my experience! Have you tried googling - you'll find lots of people
have had this problem - various suggestions to fix - you may get lucky, but I wouldn't
hold my breath.

Steve, your Googling technique need some serious tweaking.

Yeah. You can't even use the *I'm feeling lucky* button.
Google obviously sucks.

To get the comprehensive page that the other Steve pointed to,
you actually have to (gasp) use the *Google Search* button
and use the second link that Google provides.

In the year 2008, the "Windows 98 Shutdown Supplement"
is something (like SCANREG/RESTORE) that every W98 user should be aware of.

Thanks for the very helpful post. I hope the original poster finds a solution. My
experience of fixing 98 shutdown problems with MSKB articles hasn't been good - there
are too many (other) causes. That's why I suggested googling - you find other people
with similar situations to your own if the 'prescribed' fix doesn't work - which
at least give you more chances of a fix that does work.

Hilton.

Download Q4756USA8.EXE (Win98 Shutdown) and Q273017USA8.EXE (HDD Cache) from MS
Windows Download Catalog. Both will fit on a 144mb Floppy, you'll need them again.
Use the link below.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Under SEE ALSO, click the Windows Update Catalog button, then select Windows 98 and
98 Second Edition.

Save the files to Floppy, then Double click to install each. Restart Computer.

If this doesn't work follow the Shutdown Troubleshooter from previous link.

Hilton - Google for a "Windows shutdown patch". Download and install it and if you're real lucky, it will fix your problem!
