trouble installing win 98 operating system

I've uninstalled everything on this computer to wipe out all my files as i want to
donate it. However, when i tried to reinstall windows 98, it ran through the whole
sequence up to the restart. Then the computer restarts automatically and i get a
prompt to put in disk 2. there is no disk 2 and i don't think you need one. Have
tried starting it w/out cd rom support, with cd rom support, w/a backup floppy and
get the same thing. the only way i can get it to boot is in safe mode. any suggestions?

Morning Bethany,
I have a sneaking suspicion your win 98 CD is an upgrade version. I think you are
being asked to put in disk 2 of windows 3.1 install so that win 98 can verify that
you are eligible for a win 98 upgrade install. If I am right, you are going nowhere
unless you find your win 3.1 disks or else you Ebay-buy a win 98 full install CD
(with product key). Don

Bethany - if you search this forum you will find a number of posts that tell you
how to get around the issue of providing a verification disk to install an update.
I believe it's a DOS command but I don't know exactly what it is.

Yep. I've got the upgrade version of Win98. And I have my Win95 which I got for
$10 if I had to do a complete install. However, the last time I reloaded Win98
I renamed C:\WINDOWS to C:\WINDOWS0.
When I installed Win95 I had Win3.1 on another drive. Win95 did not want to install
because it was not an upgrade. I had to change the file WIN.COM in the Win3.1 drive
to WIN.CO to allow the new installation.

You can spoof an upgrade version Win98 install (without having a previous installed)

Your recent posts have either restated what has already been posted
or (like this one) vague to the point of being insignificant.
What I suggest is that you read the previous posts before responding to a thread
and when you can't give a new and truly descriptive answer
that you don't respond at all.
