red screen - lcd problem related to avg 7

I have had a hardware problem on my ibm thinkpad 600x running windows 98se. It started when I had a blazing red screen on start up, no previous deterioration. I fixed this by uninstalling all AVGfree 7 files. The computer was fine for a while, then this started again, and now the screen is black. I am using another monitor attached to the laptop right now. There had been some error messages after the AVG uninstall, at boot up, saying some .vxd files were missing. I got that corrected. Also, I should note that I have a FAT32 partition of the base hard disk (can't remember at what time I did this) Cannot find the lcd driver in the list of 32 bit files, just 16 bit files (my terms there, may be off). Checked the lcd's hardware connections, and they're ok. Battery is dead now. Any thoughts?

Well, it doesn't sound like a *software* problem to me. Let's see.

|It started when I had a blazing red screen on start up[...]
|I fixed this by uninstalling all AVGfree 7 files.
|
...or this was just a coincidental temporal correlation (not causation).

|The computer was fine for a while, then this started again,
|and now the screen is black.
|I am using another monitor attached to the laptop right now.
|
So, a totally black screen while POSTing? (A HUGE indicator.)
...and a totally black screen after booting to DOS? (A BIG indicator.)
...and a totally black screen after loading Windoze in Safe Mode?
...and a totally black screen after loading Windoze in Normal Mode?

Sounds like you called this one on the first line:
A **hardware** problem, requiring an (electronics) repair technician
who is prepared to work on your brand and model of laptop.

Thanks for your effort to respond. You are probably very correct, but does anyone else know anything about these video driver problems discussed on the avg free forum, and/or the use of virtual drivers because of fat32? I'd just like to be sure, I don't know about the boot-up examples you listed I hadn't mentioned any of that. It's not easy getting stuff with windows 98 worked on.

PS: I used the thinkpad utility program to check the drivers's lists for 16 & 32-bit.

Your problem is NOT software-related

1) If you want to discuss a discussion
*especially* one on ANOTHER site, LINK to that discussion.

2) From what you have described,
your problem is showing up BEFORE the operating system loads.
YOU HAVE A HARDWARE PROBLEM.
Messing around with software WILL NOT cure it.

Please, I appreciate that this person has taken his time to respond, that's important to me. I have his/her opinion. Now, If it is possibly and extensions conflict problem, or another idea? what harm would it do to try that in theory? I don't understand. It is my effort to be wasted. Mine

As you have *currently* reported the facts, your DEVICE is broken.

|It is my effort to be wasted.
|
*If* you had booted to DOS and reported the results,
the volunteers would have additional data points to work with.
If you have all this time to waste, start there.

You must be religious.
Y'know--if you just BELIEVE something enough, the *facts* don't matter.

Not that unusual for older LCD screens and/or the video adaptors to fail. If you
start the machine and the screen stays black you either have a defective backlight
bulb, and/or the screen electonics/video adaptor has failed. That it went "red"
on you is a symptom of the electronics going bad since it has gone black now, in
my experience... I don't think you will find that your AV did it.. Either way,
I don't think it will be a Windows issue. The hardware will have to be diagnosed
first to see if it is functioning properly, or has failed. If you can hook up an
external monitor and it works, that indicates the video adaptor is functioning for
output to an external screen, but the output for the LCD still could have failed.

In my experience, the LCD electronics have failed and since this is an all volunteer
forum, I doubt anyone will want to spend a lot of their time on what will probably
turn out to be a hardware issue, which is off-topic for this forum. Sorry....
