Hi Greg.
How long have you had this error message?
Do you get this error if you startup in Safe Mode?
I wouldn't think so. You can download the older versions here
Because you probably won't have internet access in Safe Mode you would have to download
these on a friends computer. Then the problem it transfering the files to your computer
thats if you have a floppy drive. You could download DirectX 6.0 from the above site
and zip it to multiple floppy disks then unzip it to you computer in Safe Mode. Install
it and do a restart.

well, I have downloaded win98, and directx, and for some reason- my computer will
not read any discs I try to install.
this all started when suddenly I lost win98-had to ctc dell for generic product code,
got further to password entry, then can't go any further.
then it tells me that explorer has a fatal error when I try to bypass the directx
file request.

But will it startup in Safe Mode Greg?
Just hold down the Ctrl key as your computer is starting up and then select Safe
Mode.

I can get as far as choosing to start up in safe mode, but when I do, I get to the
screen of safe mode, and then they system says window had an error. I cancel out
of the message and nothing happens.
really very weird.

So when you cancel you can't see anything or use anything?

You haven't answered a the previous question. How long this as been going on?
I presume you have tried a Scanreg /restore from DOS and selected the earliest
date possible?
Well it looks like its time for a format and rebuild Greg.

Thanks for your info. This began last week, on Friday when my wife tried to download
a browser that was supposedly safe for kids to use. After the download, she went
to restart the computer and that is when it all started. First the system wanted
the 25 digit key code for WIndows 98, she got the entered, and couldn't go any further.
I did not try the DOS recovery you mentioned.
The computer is 10 yrs old, so a new one is in order, but we have files on it that
we want to recover. Any thoughts about that?
Thanks again,
Greg

As a general plan you can buy the new computer and put this hard drive in it to have
access to your files. Different file systems and other issues may make it a bit
more complex though.

Why not try a restore as mentioned by, Keith Stanier ?
You may be able to use a Knoppix live Cd to recover your files.

I would like to try the recovery, but am unsure how to do it properly. Also I would
be hesitant to put this harddrive into a new computer- for fear of damaging the new
computer.

At the bottom of the forum page select the 'Search this forum' and search for Scanreg
/restore. You will get a lot of hits which you can read to find out how to do the
restore. I am not sure if I could remember the exact steps as I have been on
XP for a couple of years. Good Luck. JS

Click on my name, then choose, "Contact the author of this message privately". I
will reply and email you a small program that will run an auto-restore.
