And I thought that changing the defaults which Windows would then change back, was
my fault.

Hi Steve.
Do you mean Windows Explorer setup defaults?
Well you can set these by setting a particular folder how you want to see it and
use it with the views and spacing. Click on View\Folder Options and the view
tab. There is a button that says Like Current Folder click it. It will then
say Set all the folders on your computer to match the current folder's view settings
(expect for toolbars). Changes will occur the next time you open them. Click Yes,
close Explorer and re-open Explorer.

It's not the slightest bit clear what you are trying to say.
