It would be good if you *named* that program so that other people can avoid it.
Putting that name **on the Subject line** would be best.

|my screen settings were modified

Restoring video settings should be a simple tweak.
It is one of the most-asked questions here.

|and more than a dozen dll files have been placed on desktop,
|
DLL files do NOT belong on the desktop. It sounds like you have used a CD
without FIRST checking it for **INFECTED** content.

|how do I remove this annoyance
|
If you can get online,
I advise you to use an online virus scanner to check for infections.

You haven't given a useful description of *HOW USABLE* the system is now.
Start there.

I have multiple DLL files shown on desktop and I cannot delete them as I get a 'Cannot delete file: Access is denied' msg. The software was a copy of some program which is now highly-outdated, my only issue the vast amount of clutter on desktop, how do i remove?

Cannot delete clutter of DLL files on desktop

It could be that the junk program is still running. (TaskList == Ctrl+Alt+Del)

I suggest that you go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the program there.
That should get ALL the garbage which that junk program left behind.
(I **still** recommend a virus scan.)

If things are screwed up beyond Add/Remove Programs' ability to fix them,
the DLL files are not protected in DOS, so you can kill them from there.

Start by printing this page. Cross off things as you do them.

Next, get a listing of the junk:

Click on an icon on the Desktop to highlight it.

Start; Run; COMMAND

Note which are FORWARD slashes and which are BACK slashes.

DIR *.DLL /B > C:\JUNK.TXT (Enter)
This makes a file in your root directory.
It contains the names of the junk files.
You can view it by double-clicking it. While there, print a copy of it.

Restart the computer in DOS mode (using F8).
Navigate to the crapped-up directory using
CD C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP (Enter)

To see if you are in the proper place (and won't delete the wrong stuff), execute:
DIR *.DLL /B (Enter)

If that list does NOT match the printout, STOP.

In DOS, to delete the junk files, execute:
DEL *.DLL (Enter)

To verify the results, execute:
DIR *.DLL (Enter)

If you see "File not found", you are good.

To get to Windows, execute
WIN (Enter)
