I recently erased everything off my computer HP pavilion running W98 in order to install a full version of Linux (Ubuntu) When I rerun the system disc to reinstall W98 the message says "does not recognise hard disc"then "may have to use FDisc". Only Ubuntu will run now. Where do I go from here? Any suggestions, along with laughter, will be appreciated. Thank you...................Hans.

You need a boot floppy with FDISK.EXE and FORMAT.COM on it.  You can get a WIN ME 
boot disk from www.bootdisk.com if you need one.  Use the Win ME boot disk as it 
has the updated files.  It doesn't matter if it is for Win 98, SE or ME at this point. 
 You need to run FDISK to delete the non-DOS partitions, then set up a new partition 
before you exit.  When starting fdisk and it asks if you want to enable large disk 
support, say YES or you will be using FAT16 which limits the partition size to 2 
gig.  After you exit fdisk, reboot with the floppy and run format.com if you need 
to, as some install disks may not have the format option when installing Windows.

I have seen occasions when FDISK wouldn't completely clean off Linux, so in those 
cases, you either have to use the drive manufacturers maintenance/diagnostics utility 
to erase the drive or another utility to zero fill/erase the drive before you can 
use FDISK to set up a new partition and then FORMAT it.

Hello, What you might do is download a program called ranish, it is very easy to use, i have been using it for years for putting windows back on my computers after running linux. You should be able to find it on google.

Note:  Mikhail Ranish has produced *several* freeware apps.
The one described here is "Ranish Partition Manager".
It is freeware
and is in the family of apps which includes (payware) Partition Magic.

Caveat: I have NEVER found a freeware partition manager for Windoze
that can **resize** a partition.
(This is the main reason *most* people seek out these apps.)

Additional note:
GPL'd apps (open source software) such as the GNOME Partition Editor
don't suffer from such shortcomings.
