update site crashing

I currently have none of the major updates installed due to the sheer size them. However, my problem is that on a frequent-basis my browser automatically goes to the update site, which results in my PC crashing. How do I remove the update functionality so that my machine will be resistant from its attack?

Right click on the IE icon on the desktop and select Properties > then Advanced and under Browsing remove the check beside "Automatically Check For Internet Explorer Updates" then click Apply then OK.

Really BAD idea.

I'm not sure *exactly* what you mean,
but if you start using a download manager,
cache of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Download_manager[1]
your world instantly gets MUCH less irritating.

GetRight (payware) is the gold standard--but there are scads of them (even free):
cache of http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/windows4.html

(The second step to less irritation is to stop
going to microsoft.com for downloads.)

"Attack". Heh. You can tell he's a Windoze user.

Here's a crazy idea: DO THE UPDATES. (Maybe *that* will stop the crashing.)
Simply
1) Download ALL the Win98 update files (NOT
from microsoft.com).
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1153848355[2]
Note download manager (above)
--which even will allow you to download them easily (even in the wee hours)
and especially if you have some limitations WRT 'Net access / bandwidth.

2) Burn the download to a CD.

3) Install the updates from the CD.

4) Store the CD carefully--in a light-tight package.
(Now you'll never have to jump thru *that* hoop again.)
...and you'll never need to use Internet Exploder again.
(The third step to less irritation is to get yourself a MODERN browser.)

[1] Note that what Gecko (Firefox, SeaMonkey...) calls a "download manager"
IS NOT. There in no weaker part of that package than *that* faux PoS.

[2] DNA really should have said "install 9x and/or update" there.

J.R. pointed you to one mode of being a puppet of MS, but another is spawned by the
WinUP site itself. It will be found to be listed in the Add/Remove Programs list
as "Microsoft Windows Critical Update Notification". So Remove it and you won't
be hijacked by the useless bot since there will never be another new update available
EVER.

In order to use the WinUP site you will have to have IE 5.50 SP2 or IE 6.00 SP1
- the site does not work with other IE versions with Win98. If you insist on installing the updates from the WinUP site, do yourself a big favor and only do one large one or two small ones at a time since the quickest way to getting a non-booting door stop is to let the WinUP site default to 16 massive updates/downloads in one shot. The Catalog site allows downloading of the updates for archiving to CD or whatever media you want.
