computer doesnt recognize both hard drives

i just added a used 30g HD to an older computer that also has a 4g HD. The small HD has the little tab in its hole (slave?). Anyway, after booting up, the desktop shows the icons that go with the larger HD. I tried to access the smaller HD but could not find it going to My Computer and Windows Explorer. Also, I put a Netgear cd in the cd rom drive to begin the process of adding a wireless adapter to connect to a router in another room, but there was no recognition of the cd. Could this have something to do with which HD is being recognized? My guess is that its just a setting of some type. Although I can certainly go out and get a new PC, the part of me that enjoys challenges would love to get this one working properly. Any ideas and help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Where did you put the small Drive. If it is on the middle IDE connector of the CD rom, then the CD rom should be set to Master, the small Drive set to Slave for example.

steve - thanks but i think you lost there. guess it aint that easy . . . i didnt know the connector jas anything to do with the cd rom. please . . be very very specific as to the solution. do i need to pull out the little tab thing or put the hard drive in a different spot? i thought it was kind of simple having watch someone do this a few years ago but apparently not. thanks for the help. appreciate it.

Most Drives have a Label with schematic on them that shows the jumper settings. If not Google the Drive, and find out more details. The Manufacture of the Drive may have the information. Every Manufacture has somewhat different way to do it. Link has some pictures you can click on. http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=hard+Drive+jumper+settings&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi

ok...so i went in and changed the jumper setting on the big HD since I know that the jumper setting on the smaller one was for it to be a slave. I changed the settling, rebooted and it took FOREVER for the computer to do anything and then it showed the windows 98 screen for awhile and then a dos screen with the c prompt only. so i turned it off, changed the jumper again, rebooted and i get an error message saying the computer cannot find an operating system. at this point, i feel like saying, screw it, i'll just buy a new computer instead of messing around with this relic. what do you all say? i am pissed!

The small HD is not worth leaving in the Computer. If you just want data off of it, then disconnect the CD rom temporarily, and hook the Small Drive to that IDE Channel as Master. Boot up the computer and copy what you want off the Drive to your 30 gig drive. Then remove the 4 gig drive, and hook the CD rom back up. If things still don't work then you may have some other Hardware problem. When done make a Clock out of the old Small Drive.

You probably need to set Windows 98 wireless to auto dhcp. Lots of tutorials posted on the internet by colleges to show students how to set it up.

steve- you are a prince of a person; as to the computer issue, however, for some reason, we are now getting the message "CANNOT FIND OPERATING SYSTEM" at the very beginning after rebooting. after fiddling with the jumper setting (following the diagram on the HD), we thought perhaps the power/plugin connections were wrong somehow, so we moved things around, but no luck. at one point, the monitor fizzled and expired on us. (We had another one.) So now we are at an impasse. i even put a windows xp op disc in the cd rom drive in the hope that the computer would recognize it and load it, but nothing. unless someone can figure out what happened to and can reload win 98 so the damn thing can work, we will be buying, unfortunately, a new pc. too bad...i do like the challenge of getting this older, but still quite usable, pc to work. thanks again for all your help.

You really need some on site help from a Geek Friend. Computers are fragile, IDE cables can break because the wires inside the Ribbon cable are so tiny, the pins in IDE ports can get bent easily too. Moving parts in and out without Unplugging the Computer from House power can also short out the motherboard. Static Electricity from touching electric Parts with out grounding yourself first can even short things out.
