I have had this computer (compaq presario 2240) for QUITE sometime now. I havent
used it in YEARS though. i pulled it out of one of my storage units(as well as all
my other computers) and this one is the only one that is giving me problems. here
is the problem i am going through, in as good of detail as i can get:
i start up the computer, it starts loading, then the "windows 98" screen pops up
for about 2 seconds then goes to DOS mode with an error message that states, word
for word,:
The following file is missing or corrupted: WIN.COM
The followin file is missing or corrupted: COMMAND.COM
Type the name of the Command Interpreter (e.g. \windows\command.com)
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE help me. I have tried EVERYTHING i know about, except re-installing
windows 98, because i dont have the '98 disc anymore. I tried installing XP but
the memory on the compaq is not big enough so it would not install!

There's nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

You will need a bootable disk with a DOS 7 kernel (Win 9x)
cache of http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
and a working computer with a floppy drive.

Bob gave you a link to that.

Uh huh. We ARE talking about Microsoft
products.
Microsoft would probably
find that
there are about a dozen other "deficiencies" with your hardware.

I suspect that after you replace those 2 files,
you will find a lot more problems with yet more deleted/borked files.
That well-known auction site
is the logical place to get the install CD that would require.
OTOH, you are a good candidate for a FREE operating system.
The flavor of Ubuntu Linux that is made for old / low-power hardware seems apt.
http://www.google.com/search?q=Xubuntu
Unlike the more-demanding Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Edubuntu variants,
cache of http://https://shipit.ubuntu.com
you can't a Xubuntu CD delivered to your door.
Xubuntu is still free--you just have to download it and burn it to a CD yourself
(or get a nerd buddy to do it for you).
