Invalid page fault in module msxml3.dll

I know there are loads of threads about invalid page faults and I have read loads
here and on other forums, but have not found a solution to my problem. The error
message is always the same and always contains the same data about the file-address-flags
etc. It is always IE causing the invalid page fault and always in module msxml3.dll.
Tried repairing explorer-made sure I have all the most current files-ran registry
checker etc. etc. This error does not happen everywhere or all the time. One time
I was unable to access one of my on line bank accounts, but did just fine at another
one. Right now for instance, if I go to anywhere at Yahoo---Bingo. I had posted at
another site, a couple of days later I went there to see if anyone had an idea---can't
get on any longer. As soon as the site loads, "IE has encountered a problem will
be shut down...". Sometimes I get the other message in a smaller window with the
page fault. Involved are always IE and msxml3.dll. Always the same error code (a
bunch of zeros with a 5 at the end=access violation). I have done various scans for
malware/adware and am now 'clean', but didn't make a difference. One strange thing
I have found: The 'file' listed under the technical data is always 0x0000000000000000
(16 zeros). I did a search in the registry and found entries like this:
##.#0000000000000000#{cf1dda2c-9743-11d0-a3ee-00a0c9223196}. And then there is the
exact same entry but without the ##.#s. It's not only with the all zeros but also
with others like ##.#0000000000000045#{f18a0e88-c30c-11d0-8815-00a0c906bed8} and
always a corresponding entry without the #s. If anyone has any idea or suggestions
I would be so greatful for your advice/help with my issue. And if I simply drop off
the face of the earth, well, then it's because I can't get back to this site because
of this problem like it happened at this other forum where I was able to go and post
a message and then not.
Anyway, thanks in advance for anyone taking the time to read my message and trying
to help!!!
PS: OS is win98 se with IE6 sp1

I suggest you tick the **preserve your spacing** box and use carriage returns.
The Don't use this option unless you really need it part
is nonsense (unless *YOU* format your post as HTML).
If, before posting again,
you made sure the **No preview** box near the bottom of this page
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/config
is NOT ticked, you could see what your posts look like
BEFORE submitting them.
(A really BAD choice of defaults on the part of the Webmaster.)

Christel,
Go to START>Programs>Accessories>System Tools, click on System Information. Locate
and click on the Tools Tab, Click on Internet explorer repair Tool. Select Repair
then click OK to Restart your Computer.
Post back with All subsequent errors. And please follow gewg_'s suggestions.

Maybe it's just me, but-yes-I would read a post that looks like
this. In any case, I apologize for following given instructions
and not ticking the **preserve your spacing** box. As this was my
first time posting here, I figured following instructions would be
the thing to do. I will do better next time.
The **No preview** box near the bottom of this page
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/config
was and is NOT ticked. I DID preview my post BEFORE submitting and
it looked fine. So I don't know what happened here.
Again I apologize and hope to not ever again offend you in such a
manner as to invoke such a hostile response to a call for
assistance with a real problem.

Thanks for your reply Bob. I did as you instructed, but... I do
not have 'system informaton' as a choice under
START>Programs>Accessories>System Tools
I had, however, in the past, as I think I mentioned in my
original post, repaired IE via the add/remove programs function,
which had no impact as far as the invalid page fault error.
Thanks again and looking forward to hear from you again soon.

Christel,
First, go to Start>find>files or folders, in the NAMED: window type the file name
(msxml3.dll); in LOOK IN, select C: Click Find Now.
The file should be in C:\Windows\System. Size 1,096kb
Record what you find.
If you stopped at System Tools, you didn't go far enough.
Click on, System Tools, Click on "SYSTEM INFORMATION. Find the Tools Tab. It's at
the Top of the System Information Dialog Box, it is a drop down Menu. Click on it
and select IE Repair Tool.
This may be exactly the same as ADD/Remove IE Repair, I don't know. I use this version
because it works.
Everything I can find points to IE Repair for this particular error. Could be a
corrupted .dll file.
If you have a copy of IE6 SP1 on a CD you could try uninstall/reinstall.
Have you been to Windows Update lately? Yes, it still works for Win98SE.
The only other thing I can think of would be to run System File Checker From the
same Drop down menu on the System Information Dialog Box. Or type SFC in a run box
to access SFC
I hesitate to recommend this because it can be very, very tedious and is sometimes
difficult to figure out what to do.
Below is a link for an explanation of how to use System File Checker. It is helpful
but incomplete. If you try SFC and find that you don't know what to do with a result,
check the IGNORE button. No changes will be made. Be patient, this will take some
time.
http://help.stargate.net/general/sfc.shtml
Try Windows Update to see if you've missed an update, then consider uninstall/reinstall.
Be sure to restart your computer when you finish any of these Processes.
I Hope some of this helps. Post back with results.

Hello again Bob
Here's what I found in the properties for msxml3.dll:
File Version: 8.90.1101.0
Description: MSXML 3.0 SP9
Size: 1.05MB (1,104,896 bytes), 1,114,112 bytes used
I didn't stop at system tools, Bob, it's just that the options
listed under system tools did not include 'System Information'.
Here's what's listed:
Character Map
Clipboard Viewer
Disk Cleanup
Disk Defragmenter etc
It's all in alphabetical order and the only entry with 'System'
is 'System Monitor'
No, I haven't done the windows update but will. I also found
a site listing all wind98se updates that ever came out. So I
will pay them a visit again after I have checked everything
on the MS update site. I have done the SFC and all I did there
was make sure I had all the latest/newest versions of files.
Thanks for the link, I will check it out.
I have IE6SP1 saved and it's also still available at MS, so if all
else fails I will remove and reinstall it. Guess I got my work cut
out for a while.
Just one more thing that must have something to do with this problem:
I have 3 online money accounts that are all serviced by the
same system. I had problems getting around in one and called
this morning. They said that I'm supposed to be able to see 4
tabs across the top while in the accounts. On 2 I don't see them,
but I have no browser crashes. Now on the third one, as soon as
I log in, I get the
"IE has encountered a problem and will be shut down..." message.
I see the tabs in this account but cannot proceed because of the
error. When I look into the technical data, there is the problem
module msxml3.dll again.
The tech people I spoke with walked me thru some stting changes
but nothing made a difference.
Well, I will do some legwork and return when done. Thanks!!!

Hi,Christel,
It appears that you have a newer version of the file. I found the link below, which
shows which version is compatible with IE6 SP1.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/269238
Is it possible that you tried IE7 at some point, or picked up IE6 SP1 for WinXP?
I think I'd try to uninstall IE then re-install from a version compatible with Win98SE.
MS doesn't make this easy, you have to read everything carefully since they all
come under the same KB# in the Download Catalog.
I would stay away from alternate Download sites unless you've used them & found them
reliable. I think I still have a link for a Freeware site that lists Legacy versions
of IE6. I will forward it to you when I find it.
I'll get what I can find & post back.

Christel, that is a totally backwards and unneccessary way to view the problem.
IE never needs to be uninstalled prior to a reinstallation so why attempt it? Or
wait for it? A IE reinstall is 10 times better than any IE repair since you get
new files and then they get re-registered as per just an IE repair job.
It takes all of five minutes and can be done at any time provided you follow ONE
cardinal rule - you must manually check the checkboxes for all items previously installed
after you select Custom and after you have double clicked on the ie6setup.exe file.
Copy the IE installation folder to your hard drive and run the setup file from the
hard drive just for insurance that your re-installation of IE goes off without a
hitch. Then delete the folder since you have it on CD.
You do have the wrong version of MDAC files installed, so I would first delete these
before reinstalling IE.
MSXML.DLL
MSXML3.DLL
MSXML3A.DLL
MSXML3R.DLL
MSXMLA.DLL
MSXMLR.DLL
On my machine they all have the same date of 08/29/02 which indicates that they came
from the MDAC 2.8 SP1 installation package which I sugest you download first
and have on hand to install when you've re-installed IE sucessfully.
It would be best to figure out how you got those too higher versioned MDAC files
on your computer. And to remove all of them since the 6 files above are not likely
to be all there is to a MDAC installation.
Since you are also missing the System Information applet which is not an option -
it is genuinely missing which suggests that your Windows installation itself is borderline
messed up and perhaps you did not install Windows from the hard drive for example
but instead used the CD like some kinda noob. Another way to look at is the System
Information applet is missing - what else didn't get installed properly that you
have no clue about? I don't know how you sleep, but that one would keep me up nights
untill I could get Windows clean installed from the hard drive.
