Cannot increase monitor screen resolution

I cannot increase the screen resolution from 16 colors and 640 x 480 res to 256 colors
and 800 x 600 res or anything higher even though Windows and Dell bootup splash screens
appear to be in high res. Diagnostic programs show nothing wrong with adapter (16
mb 3dfx Voodoo3 300D AGP) or monitor (Dell P780 Trinitron). Computer is a Dell Dimension
XPS T600. Every time I reset the resolution in Display-Properties-Settings to a higher
resolution it appears to reset but on reboot reverts to the old minimum resolution
setting.

If you know how, try reinstalling the Video Drivers.

Thanks Steve. I have reinstalled the video driver and also reinstalled Windows 98
2, but have not formatted the disk and then reinstalled.

Might read the link, just for fun. Maybe you will read something you missed.

Thanks again, Steve, for suggesting that I try again to reinstall the drivers. I
reinstalled the adapter driver and everything is back to normal. Last fall a Dell
Technician supposedly reinstalled that driver and nothing happened. That is why I
had said previously that I had already reinstalled the driver. He must not have known
what he was doing. I did not have to reinstall the monitor drivers.
Anyway thanks to you everything works like it used too.
