Since this disappeared. Have not been able to enter my email site. I don't know that this file pertains to. Cannot locate it in Recuva. Help!

Sheila,

Go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. Locate Internet Explorer entry, highlight
IE, click add/remove, select repair button, click OK.

Restart when prompted.

Hi, Bob! I tried to do what you suggested, but I do not get a repair button. It simply says "program uninstalls Q916281 and restured your previous configuration. Do you want to uninstall Q916281?" Should I? P.S. Thank you for being there to answer so many questions. Sheila

Sheila,

I wouldn't uninstall any file like that one. That is a Microsoft update.

Look again at Add/remove Programs. Line should read Internet Explorer 6 SP1, or something
like that.

Just to be sure, find out what version of Internet Explorer you are running. With
Internet Explorer open, go to the top of the screen and click on the Help Tab, click
on "About Internet explorer", then read the contents of the Dialog Box that pops
up. Internet Explorer 6 Sp1 will read something like; Version : 6.0.2800.1106.

If you find you do not have Internet Explorer 6 SP1 installed, go first to windows
Update to get whatever updates are available for your system. Windows update is on
the Tools Tab, next to Help.

Hopefully any Internet Explorer Update will repair your problem after install and
restart.

If you have Internet Explorer 6 SP 1, go to Start>Programs>Accessories>SystemTools,
click on System Information, then go to the top of MS System Information Dialog
box and click on the Tools Tab. Internet Explorer Repair Tool should be on the drop-down
menu.

Tick Repair Internet Explorer, click OK, and follow screen prompts. You MUST restart.

Post back here with results. Good luck.

BW

Bob, you should be aware that an IE repair does nothing except re-register files
and double checks some checksums on some files. Missing/wrong files or failed checksums
generate a generic reinstall IE message. It does not and can not ever replace any
files, so your advice is a bit perplexing to me - as in why bother?

If you need a file renewed then apply the update with that file in it or re-install
IE over the top of itself to begin with which ever makes the most sense. It so happens
that the last IE Cumulative Update was 916281 and it does have the shdocvw.dll
file in it so she could just apply/re-apply the update to fix the problem.

Other options are a DOS mode file copy from one machine to hers depending on the
exact file version needed. Other files in the update on which to base a needed version
from are:
BROWSEUI.DLL
CDFVIEW.DLL
DANIM.DLL
DXTMSFT.DLL
DXTRANS.DLL
IEPEERS.DLL
INSENG.DLL
JSPROXY.DLL
MSHTML.DLL
MSRATING.DLL
MSTIME.DLL
PNGFILT.DLL
SHDOCVW.DLL
SHLWAPI.DLL
URLMON.DLL
WININET.DLL

Actually Sheila, you should uninstall Q916281 but only to restore your previous configuration
which would be where you have a matching version of the shdocvw.dll file. Then
you would want to re-apply KB916281 to get the latest version of the shdocvw.dll
file working for you again, and still retain the ability to regress Update Q916281.
If you just reinstall Q916281 again you may not be able to uninstall it as you can
now.

The shdocvw.dll file is a "Shell Doc Object and Control Library" file, I'm surprised
you can operate Windows without it as most of the other files in an IE Cumualtive
update are highly critical and very much required.

Obviously, Lee, you did not read the whole thread, or notice that the poster had
4 threads, on related issues, going at the same time.

Had you read the threads & tried to understand the situation, you would have noticed
that your Sage Advice is, not only 11 days too late for the OP, but also assumes
knowledge that the OP, obviously, does not posess.

Next time you want to flaunt your knowledge or critique someone's advice, pick a
posting that is current, then respond to the OP.
