Windows 98 Installation Disk

I have purchased a new computer (after 8 years). There are several files on my old Windows 98 machine I want to copy over to my new machine, but the Windows 98 computer does not recognize my USB device (a Centrol DataStick Sport 2GB). Where can I get a Windows 98 installation disk with USB drivers?

You got that backwards:
The manufacturer of the item to whom you gave your hard-earned dollars
is too lazy to write/include a device driver for your operating system.

Doesn't ANYONE read the packaging BEFORE handing over their money?

Look for the drivers on the website of the maker of the USB drive, not on the 98
CD. Many have them, but you have to read the small print on the pen-drive package
to realize that. Or worse, the even smaller print on an enclosure to the package.
 But, some don't support 98.

If no drivers are available, there are a few other options:

1. Connect the 98 hard drive directly to the motherboard of the new PC (presumeable
running XP or Vista).

2. Place the 98 hard drive inside a USB 2.0 enclosure (fairly cheap at any PC store).
Then attach that to the new PC via USB port.

3. Download any one of several free LINUX "live" CDs. These can boot the 98 PC
into a modern LINUX, which has automatic support for USB. By default "live" CDs
do not install on the hard drive, so they are safe to play with. Be sure to attach
the pen drive to the 98 PC, before booting from the LINUX CD, that is to avoid hardware
detection issues. If the 98 PC does not boot from the CD, you will need to change
the BIOS settings to have CD before hard drive in the boot order. My favorite LINUX
flavor for such things is KNOPPIX. It is a big download, but well worth having a
copy. It can also read/write to NTFS partitions, such as those used by XP:

Other live CDs can be found at:

If none are available, you might try searching the web for "generic" win98 drivers
for USB.

The generic/universal device drivers (I posted a link to the data and you ignored
it)
are more inclusive (more Plug 'n' Play ID numbers for more devices)
and, as such, are almost always superior to the manufacturer's.
After installing Nathan's, one should never have to worry about USB drivers again.

I am posting this information because it works and there may be others who want to do the same thing. If you want to copy files off a Windows 98 First Edition operating system and do not have a CD/DVD burner on the Windows 98 FE machine, there is a way. Go to http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php and follow the instructions exactly as they are on the page. I did, and my Windows 98 FE machine recognized my USB mass storage device. The two downloads you need from this web page are free – your only expense should be buying the USB device and a CD or DVD on which to burn it. I had to reboot my machine once more than the instructions said, but other than that, this worked very well. I hope those with the same problem will find this information helpful, and those of you who use this site a lot will become a lot less smug.

That has been common knowledge in this forum for some time.
It is also OUTDATED.

Did you try Nathan's?
The consensus is that Nathan's are more inclusive than Maximus Decim's.
Did that not work for you...
