It may simply be a problem with the way the bits are written to the media
and it may be possible to fix this using software.

OTOH, the *media* part of the hard drive could be defective.
This comes with age and can't be repaired.

Heed the warning you have been given and IMMEDIATELY back up anything you can
to external media (CD-ROM or USB thumbdrive).

Be prepared to buy a new hard drive. (A new computer *may* be a smarter buy).
