Is there some way so that when you put Windows 98 into another computer with a different
motherboard, you can make it not ask the user for drivers to the sound card, video
card, etc. and just boot unattended?

Do you mean swap the hard drives?
No if it finds different hardware to original computer on startup then its going
to ask for the drivers for this hardware.

From a CD, it can be a rather involved process: Search the ms kb (and elsewhere,
of course) using "push install" if interested.

What would you gain by doing this? Not a working OS.
Sooner or lster you have to install the drivers, better sooner.

If you don't want to PURCHASE a (Micro$oft) OS for that 2nd box
and you don't want to jump thru the hoops of INSTALLING a M$ OS,
an obvious solution is a FREE[1] bootable Linux CD:
cache of http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php
++Knoppix++Ubuntu+Damn.Small.Linux...
Linux is legendary
for its willingness to work with more hardware devices than any other OS
(*especially* OLD hardware).

...and since those are "Live" CDs, there's NO NEED TO INSTALL that OS on the HDD
--though you can go ahead and install Linux (from the same CD).
[1] Linux is completely gratis if you download the ISO image and burn your own CD;
if you order a pre-burned CD from a vendor, it's less that the price of a burger
AND, because it's also libre,
you can put that copy on 100,000 computers if you want--no additional cost.

I love Linux so much; it's actually my primary OS. I was just using Windows 98 out
of curiosity. It's a hassle :P
Thanks for your replies, everyone. Nice to know there are so many helpful people
here, in case I ever have more 98 questions.
