crash of some type

I have windows 98 se with dsl and it was running fine until Sat. When i log on all i have is my home dsl and i have a yahoo toolbar and can get to Yahoo. The problem is that everything else is blocked by in correct flame path or program no longer exists or has been moved. All my main icons are white with most of them ending in .ink and by going to start ,settings, control panel it will not let me. Also ican't get to my documents or use hotmail. I have avg that still is working on start-up and updates once a day and shows no viruses. I had spybot search and destroy and i have used many times but when i uninstalled it i was careful to restore blocked items but i didn't undo changes and this might be my problem. i have a windows 98se cd but no floppy. If i could get to control panel i would go to add/remove and go to ie6 and tools and try to repair or just remove and go to my documents and run ie6setup.exe and reinstall. help please Steve

Steve,

Try the link below, Item #21 is the one you're looking for. It will open a downloadable
file. I would save to desk top, where you can run the registry patch to repair file
associations.

I suggest you Restart in Safe Mode to do the repair.

Might be wise to disable the DSL.

Reboot when finished

If this works run IE Repair tool. Yes, you'll have to re-start again.

Post back with results.

File associations are kept in the Registry.
If it had been less than 5 days (and IF Bob's hypothesis was correct),
a Registry restore would get the same results.

When file associations go wacky, however, the file extension text DOESN'T CHANGE.
*MALWARE* does that.

OOPS! Coulda sworn the OP had already tried Scanreg /restore. Must be running Threads
together in what little Brain I have left.

thanks for pointing that out, gewg_
