Display Properties page problem

Yesterday I clicked Start > Settings > Control Panel. On the "Control Panel" page I clicked the "Display" icon. On the "Display Properies" page I clicked the "Effects" tab and checked the ""Use large icons" box. This made the icons larger than I want, but I can't change them back. The problem is now the "Display Properties" page fills the screen from top to bottom, and I can't see the "OK", "Cancel", and "Apply" buttons at the bottom of the page. Same with all the other tabs on the "Display Properties" page. I can no longer see "OK", "Cancel" and "Apply" at the page bottom. I lowered the tool bar at the bottom of the screen as far as it will go and raised the "Display Properties" page as high as it will go, but still can't see "OK", "Cancel" and "Apply" at the bottom of the page. Is there any way to shrink the "Display Properties" page so I can access "OK", "Cancel" and "Apply" at the page bottom?

Well you can actually alter the size of your desktop icons. Right-click on your desktop
and select Properties. On the Appearance tab there is a combobox (Item) showing the
the different controls find Icon and make the size smaller. There is also
horizontal and vertical spacing.

The fact that you can't see the OK, Cancel and Apply buttons means you screen size
is far to small. See it you can change the Screen area on the Settings tab to a larger
screen size. If that isn't adjustable then you need to update your graphics card
drivers.

If all else fails then you need to do a system restore. Start your computer up and
keep the Ctrl key pressed until you see the DOS menu and select Command Prompt
Only then type in Scanreg /restore and select a date before this problem
occured and do a restart.

Will doing a system restore delete anything or just put things back to the way they were? I can't change the settings, etc., because I can't see the "Apply" button to click it after choosing the changes I want. Thanks.

JWR4,

If you can't apply the changes (no Button) simply reboot the computer. Any change
NOT applied should not carry over on reboot.

Scanreg /restore could change any changes you made after the Date on the Reg file
you choose.

  • Have you tried using the keyboard Enter Key? Often the Enter Key is the same as Apply.
  • Also, try dragging the toolbar down to the lowest possible point.

As I've said if you can't see the Ok, Cancel or Apply buttons then you screen size
is to small, I've told you have to adjust it.

With all Windows applications if you press the Tab key that will move from one control
to another. You will see the control highlighted when you do this. Just practise
with the Tab key you will know when its on the Ok button and just press Enter.

Doing a system restore will only restore the registry it won't interfere with any
files. If you have installed any software in between the restore date and the current
date then you will have to reinstall the software again.
