USB support

My aim is to transfer a large amount of data to another PC. Floppy discs are unsuitable for large data so I figured out a USB storage device might do the trick. Does 98 have USB support and where would I go about finding the USB drivers if it did. Any recommendations?

Hi Matt.

First of all check the spec of the USB flash drive to make sure its compatible with
Win98SE. Especially if you are thinking of getting a big drive 4GB for bigger.

Secondly each manufacturer will supply their own drivers for the flash drive. They
either come on a CD with the drive or you can download them of their web site.

Now there are universal USB drivers you can download

Windows
98 USB Mass Storage Device Drivers

But I can't get these to work. I have Kingston and PQI flash drives and I use the
drivers supplied by those manufacturers.

We have had this discussion on here many times. I'm sure gewg will be around shortly
to give his links and opinion.

Yup. They're ~$7/GB these days--and they keep VFAT long filenames intact
(as opposed to ISO9660, which is used in CDs), making them a superior method.

Yup.

I keep my preferences http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/config
at 50 threads per page, so this is still on the front page for me:

Of course, it would have been *smarter*
for you to have *read the packaging* BEFORE handing over your cash.
The manufacturers that you want to give your money to
make the effort for Win98 and are EXPLICIT about that on the blister pack
and in their ads.

Keith's hypothesis about 4GB limits on storage devices under W98 is nonsense.
OTOH, as Keith is well aware, *some* manufacturers make non-standard products
AND do a lousy job of producing device drivers for their products.

Keith is considerably behind the curve on this topic.
The (older) device driver to which he pointed is by Maximus Decim
and is inferior to the one produced by Nathan Lineback (toastytech)
--though the lesser one may still work for you[1].

Keith's is the *only* anecdote I have seen/heard
that says these generic/universal USB device drivers don't work properly.
That he has TWO devices that don't comply is especially curious.

[1] If you do use that one, make sure you at least don't get the even-older version.

Windows 98 does have USB support. My question is though - why not transfer via an
ethernet cable? They're quite cheap and will work well. In fact a length of crossover
cable between two PCs will cost less than a memory stick.

I don't know if there's a size limit but it should be able to handle memory sticks
up to 40GB. I remember using compact flash cards with a USB reader on my 98 PC.

From the sound of things, he doesn't have ANY backup on external media.
I think a thumbdrive is an ideal method to do this--2 birds; 1 stone.

I find that blue tooth dangles are a easy way to send files between XP and win98SE computers, Works quite well, and well, --- no cables.
