Your search engine technique need work:
from Google Groups -- Google_Web_Search_Help-UsingWS
e.g. http://www.google.com/search?q=extended.offline.self-test+S.M.A.R.T.
|Can someone tell me what this is?
|
Think of it as SCANDISK/SURFACE (aka Scandisk--Thorough) but on steroids.
It's not quite the best you can get for analyzing a drive's condition
http://www.google.com/search?q=Spinrite+legendary
but it is part of the free utilities that came with your drive:
http://www.google.com/search?q=Self-Monitoring.Analysis.and.Reporting.Technology
Just curious? ...or having problems?
If you've ever run Scandisk(Thorough),
you know that writing to EVERY spot on the drive to see if it is working right
takes a LONG time.

I'm running win98 on an older Compaq laptop. I have "diagnostics for windows ver
4.12a" installed in control panel. On the test mentioned, it tells me that my hdd
has failed, and the action to take is replace the hdd.. This is the only test the
hdd fails. Using Compaq diagnostics, everything passes with flying colors. To me,
the hdd seems to be working fine, no operating issues. Just was wondering about this
test, thanks.

If the wording is as you report, that is just odd.
Makes me wonder if a non-English speaker wrote that version of S.M.A.R.T.
(This reminds me of some of the crappy freeway signs I've seen
that may as well say "You just passed your exit".) 8-(

SMART is *VERY* good at predicting eminent drive failure.
If SMART has flagged this drive, I'd make sure I stayed well backed up.
I'd start price-shopping for a new drive as well.
