Lost Windows Explorer

I searched this forum and the Google Annoyance web pages for the answer to this problem,
but didn't find anything that helps.
I'm using Windows 98 SE. I read that I should right-click Start and click on Explore.
Of course. That's the way it should be, in addition to having "Windows Explorer"
in the Program Menu. But, "Explore" is grayed out when I right-click, so that doesn't
work. And, "Windows Explorer" isn't in the Program Menu.
I used "Find" for "Windows Explorer" but nothing material came up. Any suggestions
on how to get it back and installed? Thanks.

You can also Click on the C Drive in My Computer to view the Contents of the Drive.
I don't know why you are having the problem though. My first suspicion would be a
Virus,

It was the motherboard and the processor that went bad. I just picked up the computer
from the shop where those items were replaced. I told the guy to re-install Windows
Explorer and Games that were lost. He could only install Games. WE is still missing.
I looked for hours in every folder in C:\, including Windows, but to no avail.
There just ain't any explorer.exe in them. If you can find it in your Win 98SE directory,
please let me know where, then I'll be able to install it also. The "Explore" in
Start is still grayed out. It's supposed to be there. However, the new motherboard
and processor fixed all the problems of my computer freezing up, my monitor not turning
on, the blue screen every so often, crashing, reacting erratically for a long time,
the A drive not responding, and so on. For a long time my HP All-In-One printer
needed 20 minutes to bring up "HP Photo & Imaging." Same thing when I scanned a photo.
It took the same amount of time for it to show in my Photo files. Now I just click
on it and in a few seconds the Photo files come on the screen. I'm happy about that.
Thanks for replying.

With what the Computer has been through, I would just reinstall Windows. You will
probably be facing a Buggy Windows at this point.

Use the extract command, similar to:
extract /a a:\win95_02.cab unidrv.dll /l c:\windows
Explorer.exe belongs in c:\windows, but will work anywhere in the default path.

Look for Explorer in Windows directory, and... if you have a Windows key on your
keyboard, Winkey + E opens WE.
If I recall correctly, Explore won't be on Start's context menu, if you use TweakUI
and all drives aren't checked. Being greyed out, doesn't indicate a problem.

Thanks for that reminder. Winkey + E does open WE. But, definitely, Windows Explorer
was always listed in START/PROGRAMS on my win98se. I used Find for explorer.exe
and only one item came up, showing that explorer was located in the Windows folder
(though I still can't find it but don't need to anymore). Clicking on it opened
WE. Then, I right-clicked on it, copied it, and pasted the item into Start/Programs
where it is now. However, I'll use the shortcut key you just reminded me of. Thanks
very much.

You're welcome. The WE shortcut on the start menu just got removed somehow.
You wouldn't be able to do much without Explorer, since it's Windows shell. You wouldn't
be able to get past your desktop.. no start button, and no desktop icons, no way
to access anything!
